Can you realistically style your hair even remotely close to what your stylist does, if you have a more difficult hair style?

If you were having troubles styling your new cut, how should your approach your stylist to see if she could spend time helping you with your hair?

Just ask. Ask her(?) to tell you what she(?) is doing and why. Ask how you can replicate it. And don’t think you can ever make your hair look as good as a stylist will. You can’t see the back of your head and cannot reproduce the angles a stylist is working from

I can get my hair to look pretty damn good, but never as good.

i don’t trust hair stylists.

but for your situation, the better the cut, the easier it will be for you to style. if you have a great cut, you won’t have to do much to it at all. maybe find a better stylist and let em know you want a low maintenance style.

Making sure you have the right brush, blow dryer attachments, product, etc. is pretty important. And taking the time. Mine never looks the same because I’m prone to taking short cuts with my hair.

If your haircut is that much work, I would suggest a new haircut and/or stylist.

My stylist knows about my life and how much time I am willing to work on my hair….over time we have fine tuned the style to what works. It looks good and is stylish. She has taken the time to show me how to use a flatiron and given me tips from everything to eyebrow waxing to how to cut my kids’ hair myself to save money.

I think we built this relationship based on the fact that the first time I saw her I had long hair and was very pregnant. I told her….do whatever you think is best as long as it is shorter and easier to take care of….

I have found that taking her suggestions (as opposed to bringing in pics for her to mimic) has allowed her the freedom to come up w/ something that will actually work and is reproduceable…..

Of course tell your stylist if you want something low-maintenance, but it sounds like you’re willing to do a little fussing! Not to mention that there could be something really easy you could be doing that you just aren’t aware of.

My advice would be when s/he’s done cutting (say, next time you get a trim) tell your stylist “I love how my hair looks when you style it! Can you tell me how to recreate this look when I’m styling it myself?” Hopefully s/he’ll be able to give you some tips. I actually like the way I style my hair BETTER than how my stylist does at this point; it took me about a year to perfect but now I’ve got it down. :) She does a great cut (I never let anyone else go near my hair with scissors), but she has a different idea about how my curls should look than I do. If you get a few basic techniques from your stylist, buy a few products and then just play with it, you’ll get into a groove and figure out how to make it do what you want.
