Would you feel comfortable knowing your temporary internet files were attached to a document that you sent out?

Asked by koldblue (71points) March 31st, 2009

I use an online fax service, while faxing over my vehicle registration to the State for some unknown reason my temporay internet files attached to the fax as well.Out of curiosity I google just about everything from A-Z. I’ve been waiting for a knock on the door! Does anyone know how this could have happened? Virus?

To start, there’s a difference between your temporary internet files and what you type into Google. There’s no real way a temporary internet file could save all of your Google queries. If you clicked on a link in the Google results, that webpage and its images would be saved to your temp folder, but your query itself would not be saved.

How do you know that the site attached your temporary files? Did you get a confirmation? Do you have that message and can copy/paste it here? The reason I ask this is because usually online submission sites contain file limits, and one’s temporary internet files are often much higher than this limit, especially if you don’t clear your cache often/at all. There’s also the issue of attaching each and every file, one would think the system would crash after being fed hundreds of files when it’s expecting one.

Until this is resolved to your likings, I urge you to not use that online fax service unless you can guarantee its reliability. Have you contacted that company with your query? They of all people would be the first people I’d go talk to.

@dynamicduo Thanks for the reply. The google search I was referring to was the sites I actually downloaded. I had checked my sent folder after the fax was sent when I noticed the temporary internet files that was also attached to my document. As you stated the amount of files was much higher than the limit to submit. It was numorous pages, mainly consisting of images from random sites. Thanks again.

You mention checking your sent folder. What folder is this exactly? Is it a folder on your actual computer, or is it the folder on the faxing website?

Can you tell me what the online fax service was that you used?

I highly doubt that anything will be done by the State about this incident unless you had seriously wrong images (we’re talking child porn or bestiality), which I doubt you had. Regardless, I would recommend you clear out your cache now and if it ever comes up in the future, never admit that they were from ANY part of you or your computer, don’t even say they were a part of your temp files, unless you risk perjuring yourself… in that case, call your lawyer.
