Do you get a kick out of knowing the odd timing in songs ?

Asked by iwamoto (5277points) April 11th, 2009

I was listening to The Glass Prison from Dream Theater with some friends of mine, and i knew the exact drum phrasing of the intro and i got kind of a kick out of it, just like i love the fact that I’m usually the only one who knows when Ulrich sets in, in Sad but True… just wondering if it’s a normal thing or if i’m the only one enjoying that sort of stuff ?

Lars Ulrich has odd time signatures?

I didn’t know he was that creative. You know someone said that Dream Theater is all a bunch of exersizes or some rubbish. That’s so false, because they even profess that they’ve taken the odder more obscure path in their careers.

Anyways, yeah I do get a kick out of knowing odd timingin songs. I wish I knew more odd timing so I can make a world of odd timing.

People who watch Family Guy know the gag where Stewie talks about the hellish day he had stuck inside a pinball, going through the 123–45-678910–1112 count and rolling around. The music from that is the Pinball Number Count from the American 80s version of Sesame Street, sung by The Pointer Sisters, and it’s in 7/16!

@Casket: Leave Lars alone :P For some odd reason, people do jump the gun on Lars in SBT. But I, like Iwa, know the exact millisecond ;)

Lol, I’m not a drummer but he’s a gremlin.

Yes!

I always try to count out the beat to a song, and confusing beats just make it more fun.

Did you know that March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails is written in 7/8 7/8 7/8 4/4, or what could be called 29/8 time? That’s crazy!

not all of it does!!

Don’t you DARE tell me to SHUSH GOT IT!

CasketDance's avatar

Don’t you dare oh blah me.

I’m sick of swindlers running around telling honest, sincere and helpful people to be quiet.

I won’t be quiet and be repressed. Bottom line.

btw, for people who love the more complex stuff, listen to Spastic Ink or for the heavy eared, Blotted science, both amazing

i’m sure some will love this bambi interpretation

oh, about the sad but true thing, yes, lars is a classic example of overrated, but everytime that song is played, 50% are to soon and 50% are clearly too late :p

oh well, there’s only room for one Bobby Jarzombek on earth i guess
