I'm getting an iPhone tomorrow. Is there anything I should do to prepare?

Asked by ezraglenn (3502points) November 30th, 2007

My Dad just decided to get the whole family iPhones. Is there an easier way to fill up my address book than just doing it manually, name by name? Can I sync it with my gmail address book?

Syncs with Address Book (Mac) and Outlook (Windows). You can import your gmail contacts to either of those applications.

If you don’t want to use the Apple earbuds be prepared to get an adapter or specialized iPhone headphones. The iPhone has a deep and narrow recessed jack that keeps most 1/8” adapters from fitting in all the way.

I still haven’t gotten a straight answer on why.

Other than that, once you have your address book all nice and tight you’ll love how everything syncs.

Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed before you do your first sync!

plan on making spare time. You will need it to play because they are addictive

Buy a cheap (~$20) soft vinyl case for you iPhone immediately Don’t spend a lot on a case until you know more about how you will be using your iPhone.

On another note: If you don’t mind a little delicate work, you can take a sharp Xacto knife and shave down the width on many third party plugs and then they will fit into the recessed jack on your iPhone. Or, you can do what I’ve done recently, and that is buy a 24 inch headphone extension cord, shave down its jack, and plug any headphones into it. Of course, regular phones will not give you the talk back capability of the iPhone earbuds + mic.

If you haven’t bought them yet hold on for a couple of weeks. Rumors of an 3G version are growing strong. The apple store doesn’t have them in stock anymore.

If you are fine with waiting, Spanning Sync is coming out with version 2.0 which will support not only iCal syncing with Google Calender but Address book syncing, too. I’m not sure when it will be released. Do keep in mind that it is Mac only and not shareware. You can, however, demo the program for 15 days.

Wait a few more days. 3G is on its way. Can’t get an iphone in the store any longer. If you absolutely must get one tomorrow then bring it home, unwrap it and jailbreak immediately. Then figure out how to find (for me) the 1.1.4 compatibility Patch!
