Discussing Osama Bin Laden - Is Fluther being monitored by the FBI, CIA or NSA?

Asked by mattbrowne (31732points) May 29th, 2009

What if a Flutherite writes ‘I like Osama Bin Laden’. Will he or she end up on an FBI, CIA or NSA watch list? Will automatic monitoring programs (using keyword triggers) be able to single out dangerous Flutherites? Can a program detect this very question and analyze it?

Hello? Anyone listening? For the record: “I don’t like Osama Bin Laden. I hope he gets caught pretty soon to be tried and convicted in a court of law.”

How do you feel about the topic? Is Big Brother watching us?

Sure they are. Echelon is real, and at least in my country the military intelligence monitors all internet traffic across the border. I would be surprised if it wasn’t filtered by some other countries intelligence as well, but even if they weren’t they share relevant data with each other. It is awful of course. We couldn’t stop that in our country and I wonder if there is any point of resisting these things sometimes. They do it anyway.

But, I doubt my post here would be analyzed by any service just because I write Osama.
Which by the way, I find is most likely dead. Not that it seems to matter much anymore.

@filmfann – Got it. I would pay extra for a kilogram of antimatter and some consulting services. What is the best way to blow up the NSA building ;-)

It’s like that episode of South Park, the 9/11 conspiracy one. They want us to think that they are watching all of us to give us the illusion that they have the power to tap into our lives with the push of a buttom.

Yes. This is why nobody cares about it.

I think the government has much bigger fish to fry than citizens posting in a dinky forum, no offense to Fluther.

Could they find your post now that you mentioned Osama Bin Laden? Sure. They can crawl the internet just like Google can, and may even have Google’s help in areas. The program likely can’t analyze your words or meaning because most computers don’t have native English language recognition yet, although I do admit the government is usually a step ahead in things like this.

The likeliest scenario is that nothing happens with your post. The amount of processing and storage and upkeep and electricity to categorize every single post made every single day on every single website is astronomical, even with today’s capabilities.

But more telling is that they would gain nothing from doing it. There’s no point. Terrorists don’t talk about Osama Bin Laden in English on an open forum. This isn’t some jihad message board website. Those I would say they probably monitor very closely.

And we’re not Britain yet, who actually MAY have such a system set up by their own government, such that if you repeatedly Google for bomb making instructions you may be visited by the police. Ugh. How disgusting. THAT is Big Brother. That scares me, and is one reason I’ll never live there.

I don’t think we’re being monitored by Big Brother, no matter what we mention. Tracking our IP’s, they might find a few cranks fluthering from JPL or doctors trading bio chem recipies but probably not much on Osama Bin Laden.
