Depends on the shoot. Sometimes just food.

From some random searches on Craigslist (in the LA area):

Pay ranges from $65 and up per day + meals

Compensation: $50—$130

Pay up to $100 for extra work, no experience needed – See you TODAY

Basic Extras 110.00
Featured Extra 250.00
Special Ability Extras 350.00

Up in SF, there was only one listing (this was for commercials):
Lead roles pay $300/day, extra roles pay $200/day.

In New York city:

IF YOU ARE CHOSEN AS A EXTRA – TO APPLAUD, “OOH & AH” YOU’LL BE PAID $10.

IF YOU ARE CHOSEN FOR A SPEAKING PART YOU’LL BE PAID $20

IF THE SPEAKING PART IS USED IN THE INFOMERCIAL YOU’LL BE PAID $50

TERMS/PAY: SAG contract. We are offering stipends of: $250/day for Leads, $200/day for Supporting, $100 rate for Extras [SAG is Screen Actor’s Guild]

I was an extra (zombie) in Resident Evil, I got $50 or $75 or $175 (depending on where in the zombie hord I was in groaning/no groaning or attacking) a day plus lunch and dinner.

@tyrantxseries, you were a zombie?? Among the flutherfolk that is status! Were you in Groaning, No Groaning, or Attacking? Oh, wouldn’t I love to be able to put that on my resume!

I was an extra for Fools Rush in and The Devil’s Own back in the day. I remember getting paid about $250 for two days of shooting.

Personal advice: try your hardest to stay away from bit roles. Not only do they suck, but you tend to be treated as “just an extra”-actor by your agency. Get into SAG as soon as you can.

@Jeruba I did all three (I did for over 3 and a half weeks)

In my area, extras don’t get paid at all, and rarely get any food, either. But then we have only had two or three SAG shoots in our area. We do have a very active indie film interest here, though.

I’ve worked on set twice so far as and extra and if can vary, for the movie I did it was $64 for 8 hours but anything over 8 hours is overtime. I have just confirmed another spot coming up that’s $75/8 and overtime after 8 hours each day.
