General Question

As a generalisation, do Italians have pineapple on their pizza?

Asked by julia999 (343points) August 1st, 2009

I remember reading in a book called “Looking for Alibrandi” that Italians traditionally don’t have pineapple.

Thanks!

I don’t know about generally… but this explains how it happened

I thought only Australians do that, is it happening in the USA now too? You would not believe the stuff they put on pizza here?????

I like my traditional style, tomato, cheese and on an adventuresome night, some pepperoni.

I did an Italian language search for references to “pizza all’ananas”, and I’m finding reactions like this: “dio santo che schifo” (“Good God, how disgusting”)

So I’d say no.

I’m Italian American and I can tell you, it ISN’T a pizza (to us) if it has pineapple.

Pineapple on a pizza? You’re bastardizing pizza (to traditional Italians). It isn’t the pineapple that’s the problem. It’s putting it on a pizza that’s the problem. You ruin the pizza.

But pineapple in and of itself? NEVER heard of anyone who thought it was taboo.

Pineapple on pizza is probably one of the grossest things I ever tried. It doesn’t belong on pizza by any stretch of the imagination.

marinelife's avatar

@Quagmire It isn’t pizza to me with pineapple on it either.

@rooeytoo Sorry, it has long been a Left Coast thing here.

Italian pizza is is quite different from its American (nod to rooeytoo & Australian) offspring. Here is a classic Pizza Margharita.

I love traditional Italian pizzas, but I do like Hawaiian pizza too. I’ve never met anyone else who does!

Quagmire's avatar

I like the taste of what’s called “Hawaiian Pizza” too, but it’s not really pizza.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

Pineapple on pizza is a wonderful thing. Traditional? Probably not. Tasty? It’s all over it.

One of my favorite shows is “Two and a Half Men” and there’s an episode where Charlie is talking about pineapple pizza:

Pineapple on pizza makes about as much sense as hot sauce on ice cream.

autumn43's avatar

@The_Compassionate_Heretic – Yup! Totally agree. It’s one of those things – you either love it or hate it.

I was actually having a conversation about this with an Italian friend last Saturday – because I was ordering a Hawaiian. I was told in no uncertain terms that it was NOT pizza if it had pineapple on it. So, we agreed to disagree. :0)

Sarcasm's avatar

I sure hope not. Pineapple on a pizza is an abomination.

I bet if you asked really nicely, Thammuz would give you an answer

@Quagmire – ‘Two and A Half Men’ totally rocks! LOVE THAT SHOW!

unless you live in california, pineapple does not go on pizza

Darwin's avatar

Even if you do live in California, pineapple does not belong on pizza.

Thank you everyone for your answers, I appreciate it!!!

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

I’m concerned about the disrespect of California just because we think a little different with our pizza. I say, c’mon out and I’ll give you a slice a pineapple pizza that will change your mind.

rooeytoo's avatar

yukkkky I’ve tried it and I don’t like it, although I do love California cheeseburgers!

Sarcasm's avatar

What qualifies as a California cheeseburger?

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@Sarcasm Most of the time it’s goat cheese.

rooeytoo's avatar

I thought it referred to a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, bacon and avo with mayo. You know a heart attack on a bun.

Actually it doesn’t really sound very California like?

Sarcasm's avatar

Hah, I guess so.
Typically around here, Lettuce, Tomato and Mayo are standard on burgers. Bacon is a typical option.
Can’t say I recall ever seeing avocado on a burger, despite how many avocado fields there are out here. Are they called fields? regardless, the areas in which avocados grow.
I don’t see goat cheese on burgers either. There are some places that will have goat cheese pizzas as an option (Not amazingly common, but I have seen it).

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

Cheeseburgers here mostly are the same. We’ll put some weird cheese on it. Most places of any note here don’t even bother with the avacado. In fact I think more highly of a burger joint that doesn’t have avacado in the building.

Personally I love pineapple on pizza, but the answers this question is getting are very contrasting. People seem to either like it or hate it.

Darwin's avatar

Well, I like anchovies on my pizza, but pineapple makes me queasy.

stelinx's avatar

I’m italian and no pineapple is just a big no, even if I love pineapple, on pizzas it’s just wrong.

Although I agree with others that pineapple on pizza is an abomination, it is very common here in California, and is often referred to as a Hawaiian Pizza. Unfortunately, pineapple is not the only highly inappropriate thing that Californians put on their pizza. Chicagoans seem to be of a similar mind; they often pile every imaginable piece of crap of their pizza, which ends up looking like a vegetable garden.

I am a straight cheese pizza guy from New York who grew up on consistently excellent pizza. Adding pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms is about as far as I’ll go, if pressed, but people here think that’s plain, boring, and tasteless. Needless to say, in most cases they have never even tried it.

Darwin's avatar

I gotta have cheese and anchovies on my pizza.

mtirado's avatar

no! they do not no fruit at least in the north!

julia999's avatar

Thanks everyone for your answers!

FoxMulder2014's avatar

No, they don’t. Pineapple does not go on pizza at all. Not even if you live in California. Only if you live on the banks of the river Styx

kpusa78's avatar

I live in the midwest and while we have a pizza chain that does and many local spots try to imitate, it’s not at all good in my opinion. In all actuality, not only is the pineapple rather gross, but so is the whole Hawaiian pizza… Yuck, pineapple, ham, slived almonds and cinnamon. Holy canoli, that’s horrifying! I’m simple- pepperoni or plain cheese.

Oh those going to Italy, don’t ask for a pepperoni pizza, it doesn’t exist or you’ll get a pizza with peperoni (peppers-usually green). You need to ask for salamino or salame. Pepperoni is an american term only and is actually a dried and spiced salami.

While there are apparently over 100+ variations to Italian pizza purists there are only two Italian pizzas the marinara and the margherita pizza and is the only way most italians will eat them
most other variations come from such countries as Canada , America ,Greece ,Korea…etc.
