How do I fix my DVD/CD drive in my laptop? Read for more details?

Asked by sweetteaindahouse (2147points) August 5th, 2009

I have a Dell Studio 1537 running Windows Vista. Every time I stick any sort of disc(DVD or CD) into my drive it reads it as being blank. All I want to do is to put songs on iTunes. Do you think my drive is dead?

Has it ever worked?

In what program do you receive the information that the disk is blank?

I believe that’s a pretty new model which means you should still have warranty coverage. I would probably give Dell a call: 1–800-449–3355 and see what they say first.

@NaturalMineralWater‘s response is very good. Editing the registry can be a fix. It helped my Blu-Ray drive start functioning again.

However, sometimes a simple driver install can work too.

Thanks for the answers guys. Here is what really happened. My computer was running slow one day so I ended some .exe’s. I must have ended something I needed. I just restarted my computer and it worked fine. I should have thought of that first.
