How can I get rid of all those unneeded processes running on my laptop?

Asked by erichw1504 (26453points) August 12th, 2009

I’ve noticed a lot of processes running in the background that don’t seem to be needed. How can I tell which ones to stop and is there a way to permanently rid of them?

You can do Google Searches by the Process name and you can usually find out if it is needed and/or how to stop them.

Check the process using this site.

Then use Autoruns to delete the process entries so they won’t start again.

You can also use Blackviper’s website to configure your services. It shows you which services are really necessary and which ones you can shut off to reduce unnecessary processing.

I use CCleaner (free).

It has a “Start Up” button where you can disable or remove any start up item.

@PerryDolia that is a great utility! 2nd the recommendation.

But you can do that through Windows. The trick is knowing which ones you should keep running. What is the advantage of CCleaner??

@Quagmire It shows them in one nice user friendly spot(instead of spread out msconfig or manual hklm\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run”, “Startup”, etc…. In addition I love the registry repair tool that comes with it, does a great job of getting rid of unused entries. And it has a nice installation remover for stubborn programs that won’t remove their entries in add/remove programs.

I have the same problem, my laptop always has at least 90 processes running.
