Plant shelving that could serve as a room divider: what am I talking about?

Asked by Jeruba (55837points) August 15th, 2009

Does such a thing exist, or have I just imagined it so vividly (because it ought to exist) that I think I’ve actually seen one?

I’m picturing open metal shelving, probably brass-toned or else of wrought iron, that installs floor-to-ceiling like a pole lamp. Maybe 4 shelves, let’s say about 3 feet wide and 6 or 8 inches deep. The idea would be to place a number of plants on the shelves, including hanging ones like pothos, to act as a sort of divider between two sections of a large L-shaped room. I want to narrow the opening a bit so it is more like two rooms, but without a solid wall. I thought a plant stand might work.

If you know what I’m talking about, what’s it called and where might I find it? If It doesn’t exist, well, I guess there’s always a folding screen.

I’m on my phone so can’t do copy/paste but if you put the phrase ” etagere for plants” into Goog and click on the first entry there are pics of some really lovely ones on the far right column on the site. All diff shapes, sizes, materials
and prices.

I’m assuming that’s the general type of idea

You could also check out what are termed “bakers racks” but which can obviously be used to display anything one wants.

@Jeruba , I know what you are talking about because I have done the same in the past. I don’t know about a specific stand for this purpose, but, I went to Lowe’s and got some metal (bars) shelving that screwed together. It comes in sections so you can “build” different structures taller, shorter, more or less shelves, etc. They are basic looking but can be decorated with baskets, plants, etc. The one I use has four floor to ceiling poles that anchor it and four shelves.

@eponymoushipster Where do you find this stuff? Funny!

@chyna, I think he might have just got it from aprilsimnel’s 10k party.

@Jeruba bah! you know how many times i’ve watched that movie? i even have it in russian…

I used one similar to this, only with shelves instead of cabinets. They can be placed at any height.

@Jeruba….Here are Google images of etageres as @Buttonstc suggested. For floor to ceiling shelves like a pole lamp, they make such things for showers, but they are either chrome finished or plastic and may not be heavy duty enough for heavy potted plants. See ya….Gary aka wtf

@eponymoushipster…Is it sub-titled or dubbed Russian?

eponymoushipster's avatar

@whatthefluther dubbed. which makes it even better.

@eponymoushipster…It must be hilarious if they do the voices justice. I trust they say ne and not nyet Any in Russian on youtube?

“This one”: is brushed nickel and glass, which might be easy cleaning for plants. They have others including an antique silvertone.

Restoration Hardware has a bunch of nice choices too.

@eponymoushipster….I found this sketch (not HG or in Russian, but funny nonetheless, nyet?

@whatthefluther that’s pretty good. as for the russian dubbing on youtube, i’ve not seen it if it is. a friend gave me the file.

Thanks, all. I think etagere is the right term. Thanks, @Buttonstc. I had thought the essence of an etagere was the stairsteps aspect of the design—i.e., narrowing toward the top—and many of them are like that, but not all. I do need something that doesn’t have a front and a back—doesn’t go in a corner or against a wall. The screens are lovely, @syz, but for the use I have in mind I need something stable on four legs, and narrow so it won’t require a lot of floor space. I thought floor-to-ceiling would be best for stability. At least now I know what I’m looking for. @basp, thanks for the idea of assembling it myself. I’ll look for something like that. @YARNLADY, I didn’t think of looking on Amazon.

@Marina, your first link is missing. The other does have some lovely stuff.

I did see some beautiful examples at the various links provided (thanks, @whatthefluther). I am not in the $750—$3000 price range, unfortunately, but I could at least get an idea of the possibilities.

@eponymoushipster, I wasn’t suggesting you were a stranger to the movie, only that you might have seen that link here recently. No slight intended! I have seen it many times myself, and yet somehow, amazingly, the ending always catches me off guard.

@Jeruba no, i wasn’t insulted. it’s all good! any time is a good time for a MP quote. Grandma’s funeral? ”Bring out your dead!” :)
