How can I be on time when my class is very far from my last class?

Asked by Ailia (1363points) August 24th, 2009

Ok so I just started high school; pretty good except all my electives are kind of blahh but oh well. Anyways what I am having trouble on is my last class. I have p.e. and its the farthest from my 7th period class. How can I make it to my 7th period class without being late?? Anyone have or had the same experience? What did you end up doing?

1) Go as fast as you can to 7th period. Don’t stop for anything—take care of your locker/bathroom needs the period before. Don’t stop to socialize, either.

2) Explain to your teacher the situation. If its a legitimate problem, I haven’t had a teacher refuse to grant a 1–2 minute “grace period” for you.

Need more info.

What are you doing at the end of P.E.? Changing clothes? Showering? Styling hair? Applying makeup?

Are you stuck in P.E. right up until the bell rings?

How far away is this other class? It’s high school… not a university campus. 3 minute walk? 8 minutes?

How long are you allowed between classes? 5 minutes? 10?

Are you sure you know the fastest route? Might there be a shortcut?

Like @FrogOnFire said, plan your bathroom breaks when you have classes near each other. Also, go fast and don’t be afraid to push people. If people are walking slowly in front of you, push through them.

Well @robmandu I don’t change clothes for p.e. at least not yet. And I have 1–2 minutes before the first bell to reach the doors to the high school but today it seems. But when I start changing out of my p.e. clothes it will take me those minutes to finish. And I only have 5 minutes to get over there. It takes about 6 minutes to get there. And my school has a bunch of traffic. I powerwalk to every class and even more for this but for this one it doesn’t seem enough. I really don’t want or need tardies and I want to be always be prompt and I don’t think the teacher will allot me time, maybe, maybe not. So should I start mauling people like @ekans said to do?

Wow, you have seven classes a day? We have 4.

Anyway, to the issue:

Go to the bathroom, get a drink, etc. during lunch and in earlier classes. Don’t stop for anything on the way to 7th period. If you drop your things, or fall down the stairs, or something else inevitable like that, be sure to let your teacher know, I’m sure he/she will cut you some slack if it was something you couldn’t control. Don’t stop to talk to friends, you can say hi if you pass each other on the way, but don’t stop to talk. Don’t stop to talk in the locker room either when changing clothes etc, just change your clothes, brush your hair, etc, and get out as quickly as possible so that you can get to your 7th period on time. Try to use the least crowded stairway, often in high school, the longest way around is actually the quickest.

If you’re really having too much trouble getting to class on time, talk to your guidance counselor to see if you can get your schedule re-arranged so that your classes are closer together when you have them.

I wish you the best of luck, I just started high school today as well. Luckily, all my classes are on the first floor except for my last period.

@mangeons Thats great advice except I follow all of that anyways. I think I’m just going to see how tomorrow goes and if I am still late then I will change classes or at least switch them up. Thanks. Oh and how was high school for you by the way?

mangeons's avatar

It was great, I think I’m going to like AB Physics, and I loved French 2. I really want to switch out of Woodworking though, which they randomly put me in. Dx And we got a new novel in English 9 Honors that I’m pretty excited to read. It’s called Anthem.

And you? (:

Collect some data.

How much time is allotted by the school between the end of sixth period and the start of 7th period.

Use a watch to time how long it takes you to travel from your sixth period desk to your locker at PE.

Is the travel time less than the allotted time? If not, talk to your 7th period teacher and show him the data.

what do you have? 5 minutes between classes? I used to have PE before my last class for a year or two in highschool also, and it was usually astronomy which is pretty far on the other end, never seemed to be a problem, ask your PE teacher to let you change a few minutes earlier if you need to, or stop chatting with your friends the whole way.

Ever heard of the Harvard Walk? Harvard students have learned how to walk very quickly since their campus is quite large and getting from place to place means you need to get a move on.

I recommend praticing your Harvard Walk now. All my past teachers know I had to do some serious truckin’ from one class to another.

I’m not a Harvard graduate btw

Ailia's avatar

sigh If it only was that simple. You see my school doesn’t have lockers. I don’t talk to friends on the way and its a really long way. @The_Compassionate_Heretic you think they’ll allow me to do that? I think the harvard walk involves a bit of running am I correct?

mangeons's avatar

My school has lockers, but I don’t use mine. I’d rather just carry my backpack around.

Dont socialize…works for me! BEST WISHES!

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@Ailia The Harvard Walk is a quick tempo stride. Running is just running, there’s no clever phrase for that.

Your best bet is in economizing your time:
Put your books for your next class in your bag and take that with you to PE. Assuming you have a gym locker, put it there and after you get out of PE, get your stride going and head out. You’ll make it.

The part about not socializing is key. Wave, say hi, and don’t break stride when you see friends.

If you’re doing it right, you don’t have to run.

kfingerman's avatar

Is this a walk through halls or is a lot of it outside? If it’s the latter, I’ve got two words for you @Ailia: Razor Scooter. Or maybe a bike if that’s feasible. You’ll get to 7th period with time to kill.

Ailia's avatar

@kfingerman and @The_Compassionate_Heretic those are great ideas. But first off I don’t have a locker at all, not even for gym. Second I’m not allowed to use any kind of scooter or bike. So thats out of the question. So I guess I just run then?

ABoyNamedBoobs03's avatar

@Ailia where do you keep your stuff?

I mean, all your books and notes for each class, I know if I tried to carry all my stuff with me when I was in highschool it’d be a pretty good workout after one period of it.

The_Compassionate_Heretic's avatar

@Ailia You could get roller shoes. There’s times I’d like a pair of those but they don’t make them in my size.

But yeah maybe the first day or two you run for it. After that, you have a feel for what your schedule is like and if you plan your time well, it’ll be tight but you can manage it without having to sprint the whole way.

Ailia's avatar

Hey everyone, guess what?? I found a shortcut! I couldn’t believe it at first, but surprisingly I was the first one in my seventh period class! It worked! Oh and @ABoyNamedBoobs03 I keep all my things in my bag. If I could have a locker I would use every inch, but unfortunately they ripped them out of the walls…..so what can I do? My bag is getting really heavy now and I hope the new policy of keeping things in the classroom will kick in soon…..My shoulders are trying to go lopsided again.
