We were created as a cosmic version of the ant farm.

To consume copious amounts of pancakes.

There are many different answers. Choose one yourself. You can start with the Big Bang theory and then from there it’s the start of Evolution and to help further investigation of that Darwinism is helpful.

…Or just believe what the church tells you.

Maybe the why of living is not as important as the fact that we live.

To provide dogs with a reason for living.

One explanation I find appealing is that God (I use this term loosely) wanted to create a plane of existence where his presence was not obvious, i. e., our universe. Then he broke off pieces of his own essence and sent them down to our planet (and perhaps many others as well), where rational beings were given free will and the opportunity to experience many different things, including the ability to discover God or not to. Ultimately, our purpose in life is to reunite our souls into the collective that is God. How to get there is up to debate.

Of course, the above is a quaint notion that I want to believe so I won’t feel like my existence is completely finished once I’m six feet under. My more rational side thinks we are here due to a series of fortunate circumstances that allowed this planet to produce intelligent life. There is no reason why we are here; we are just lucky we are. And since we don’t know if there is intelligent life elsewhere, we need to be very careful and make sure we don’t destroy ourselves. Wouldn’t it be a tragedy if the only intelligent life in the entire universe consumed itself over petty boundary disputes and negligence over the care-taking of their planet?

Your question makes the assumption that we were created and that there is a distinctive purpose behind the creative act, in short the question, although not unreasonable, would squeeze the realm of existence into something akin to a Coke can, for the facile purpose of mass consumption and instant, somewhat transitory gratification. To conclude then my answer to this question is no

We weren’t.

The complexity in life is the result of mathematical principles behind non-zero-sum games.

I’d like to think that the rest of you were created to serve me. Unfortunately, I can’t find a lot of evidence to support that theory. Unless I change my idea about what “service” is. Perhaps you are serving me by placing so many difficulties in my path. Sigh.

To produce offspring who will ask why they were created

To become whatever we want to be, because we can.

JLeslie's avatar

I never think of why, it just is, we just are.

We are the product of the evolution of the universe/multi-verse as a way for it to discover and explore itself.

oratio's avatar

I don’t see that there is a why, just how.

@drdoombot you theory sounds very much like a short story I once read but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called.

drdoombot's avatar

@RareDenver The Bible, perhaps? It ain’t that short though.

RareDenver's avatar

@drdoombot definitely NOT the Bible, I’m searching now, I know I read it on my PC, it was a .pdf, must have deleted it.

We create ourselves as we mature into the person we are. That is ‘ourselves’ as in ‘our personalities’.

What person we are is the only sense in which we are created in and since we ourselves are the ones doing most of that creating, we are responsible for the why ourselves as well.

Btw, why does everything need a reason to be?

gailcalled's avatar

@AstroChuck: Because Fluther doesn’t allow us declarative sentences.

To glorify God

JLeslie's avatar

@AstroChuck I don’t know. That is why I said I never think about why. Some people NEED answers and always seem to be searching or filling in why with God did it. I think theists are more likely to have these type of questions.

Axemusica's avatar

@kibaxcheza ”...a man and a woman…. have way too much tequila”? are these Mexican men and women? & do they create the tequila? :P @tb1570

kibaxcheza's avatar

Not Mexican, the nationality doesnt matter. But lets face it, vodka makes you wanna fight, jager and everclear put youre ass on the floor, and rum and whiskey dont let your lil soldier stand at attention. XD
