I'm watching the movie "Alive" with a friend (never seen it before). Survival techniques; be it in the cold, heat; however bad the elements; what are some that you know of?

What have you learned throughout your life; whilst camping or just information that you’ve picked up along the way (not something that you’ve just found online). I find this stuff fascinating.

What few things would you need (use) to get by?

Swedish FireSteel. I don’t leave home without it.

I know about being cold :-)
-NEVER wear cotton as a base layer against your skin. Wear poly blends or wool.
-If you are cold, and you have to pee, then pee. It takes energy for your body to keep your bladder warm, and often you’ll feel much warmer after relieving yourself. It may suck to pee in the freezing cold, but really, it works.
-Out in the cold, keep a high calorie snack on your person. Something like a chocolate chip cookie, or peanut butter sandwich. When you start feeling the “shivers” (a sign of mild hypothermia taking place), eat your snack to get you body working on burning cals again.

I’m sure I know more, but those are my favorites.

Here is my #1 all time favorite survival item: Trick birthday candles. The kind you can’t blow out.

They will start a fire in any conditions because you can’t blow them out. I always have about half a dozen and some waterproof matches in my survival kit.

Always good to know how to make a solar still – then you will have drinking water. I wish more people stuck in Katrina aftermath would have known this.

And: if you don’t have a solar still but wear silver jewelry, you can use your bling to purify water, too.

My son was an expert winter mountaineer. One of his friends tells the story of hiking with John and feeling his feet go numb one snowy day. John suggested that the friend put his feet in John’s armpits, which said friend did. it saved the day and the feet.

Learning how to build igloos is useful also.

For heat, take tons of water and water-purifying tablets.
