Too good to be true?

Asked by Cartman (3054points) September 28th, 2009

Have you ever experienced anything that sounded to good to be true but wasn’t? What was it?

That “too,” “to” and “two” mean three different things and are not interchangeable. And that love letter from the Namibian banker left me slightly suspicious.

A spinal block ;)

Yes.
In my early days of Diablo 2, I was adventuring through Act 4 when a friendly chap joined my game. He told me he’d love to try out a Necromancer (which I was) and was willing to trade his Amazon for it.
So we both gave eachother our account names, and then our passwords. I logged out and attempted to log into his account (or rather, now my account) when I learned the password was wrong. I tried to log back in what was originally my account to learn the password had been changed.

And I’ve never trusted anybody since!
except that other time when I met someone really cool on Battle.net and he pretended to be a she.

I honestly can’t think of anything that I believed too good to be true that wasn’t. I’ve had plenty of “too good to be true” moments though.
Maybe life is just a series of “too good to be true” moments. There’s always a catch or a downside to something, sometimes the negative aspects are worse than others, sometimes they are surmountable, sometimes they are not.

@Sarcasm Who plays Necromancer? Worst class ever
On to the topic: someone recommended me a Beatles album, claiming it was their best. I knew it was too good to be true since I dislike them, so I just ignored his advice.

Yup. I hope so. Time will tell.

Only once. I read a lot, and sometimes post reviews of books on Amazon. Not those “book report” reviews, but quick blurbs a few sentences long at most. Several months ago, I got an email from Amazon about their Vine program. The email said I could choose two books a month at no cost. Even the shipping would be free! The only thing I had to do was write honest reviews for the books. As long as 75% of the books I’d ordered had been reviewed, I could pick two more books with the next newsletter.

I’ve always found Amazon pretty trust-worthy, so I gave it a try. Lo and behold, it was all true. Each month I get two completely free books in the mail. They are almost always advance reader copies, and most of them are enjoyable to read. I take a few minutes to write a review on Amazon, and that’s it. Sometimes I’ll get a second newsletter allowing me to pick an extra two books from whatever they still have in stock. There are few things I love more than books, and free books are just the most wonderful thing ever.

Other than that, every other “too good to be true” thing really did turn out to be, well, too good to be true.

@MissAusten They still do that program? How do I sign up? :)

MissAusten's avatar

@RedPowerLady I think it’s invite only, sorry! I wish they had some kind of a referral program, because I know several people who would love it and could write good reviews.

It was when I first learned what Friends with Benefits meant.

Not yet and I’m not giving up hope either that it will happen someday. If it does, all of you on Fluther will be the first to know about it because I’ll post it right here in this forum.

Yes, once. I saw a man smiling at me in a nightclub one night, he came over to give me his name, I looked at him and took his hand and from that night on we lived together for the next 4 yrs. It was wonderful and just about every day I’d wake up and tell him he was the best thing in my life or he’d say it. Since that time I’ve kept hope I can have a love like that at least just once more.

@hungryhungryhortence My story is almost like yours, only it happened at a conference and we are still going strong, after 35 years.
