What is your favorite box cake/brownie mix?

Asked by jlm11f (12413points) September 30th, 2009

This is for when you don’t have time to start from scratch, or you just don’t have all the supplies. What brand and flavor box cake/brownie mix do you prefer? I am really looking for opinions on chocolate mixes, but feel free to list all your favorites!

Don’t forget to include why you like that particular mix!

Ghirardelli double chocolate brownie mix, cuz it works well when I am in need of my chocolate fix and has a good chocolatey taste

Ghiradelli Dark Chocolate w/ Walnuts.

The cheap Betty Choker stuff with vanilla ice cream.

edit :: That was a typo.. But it seems appropriate.

I love Betty Crocker Fudge Brownies and Funfetti!

Betty Crocker with the Hersheys liquid packet.

For cake, I prefer Duncan Hines.
Brownies, the Ghirardelli double chocolate.
I think Duncan Hines also make a respectable brownie mix.

@SpatzieLover – What grocery store do you find that in?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@PnL All of them near me carry a few varieties of Ghirardelli mixes (even the cheap ones by me have it). I hate waxy, cheap chocolate, so I keep a stock of these in my cupboard ;)

I love the microwaveable cakes (forgot the brand). They’re so good!

@JLeslie has hit the nail on the head again. I am CONVINCED you cannot buy brownie mix better than the betty crocker kind with the hershey syrup packet. it is SSSSO good.

ps – i think ghirardelli is the worst chocolate in the world.

My mom and I both prefer Duncan Hines cake mixes, because they tend to be more moist than other brands (and tastier). My mom doesn’t even like cake, and she stocks up whenever that brand is on sale, so for Birthdays, parties, etc., she has a reliable cake.

I don’t think the brand makes as much difference in brownie mixes. (I’ve also made brownies from scratch and didn’t notice enough of a difference to make it a regular thing.) After all, brownies = chocolate, and it’s hard to make bad chocolate. :D

Aldi’s brownie mix is amazing! Someone at work makes them and everyone in the agency agrees they are the best brownies ever. She does nothing special with the mix just makes it as directed.

I like the Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix too. Instead of adding water, like the directions say, I add hot, strong, coffee. To die for. The cake won’t taste like coffee, but the chocolate flavor will be richer.

This is only partially off-topic, but if you want an incredible chocolate cake recipe from scratch, use the one on the back of the Hershey’s Cocoa tin. I think it’s called Perfectly Chocolate Chocolate Cake. There’s a frosting recipe to go along with it. I’ve made it many times—very easy, uses one bowl, and always comes out super moist. The only thing I change is to use hot coffee instead of the boiling water called for in the recipe. Oh, I have such a craving for it now. :(

Another vote for funfetti. Of course, it’s the only one I know.

Ohhhhh. wait. Betty Crocker angel food mix. Now THAT is amazing, and not as caloric as you’d think!

I like the plain old chocolate flavor, and the funfetti.

I don’t like brownies.

I almost always buy Duncan Hines cake mixes.

Jiffy (as in the corn muffins) has yellow and white cake mixes that are very good IF you can find them. The yellow one makes a TDF pineapple upside down cake in an iron skillet. No other brand tastes the same.

Duncan Hines Chewy Fudge Brownies with walnuts added cannot be beat.

Damn, now I really wish I had some eggs to go with one of the box mixes in my cabinet.

I don’t like funfetti or Hershey’s…tastes like wax to me

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Supacase Mmmm…Jiffy chocolate cake is a good one, too.

Pillsbury Moist Supreme classic, vanilla and chocolate mixes.

I don’t remember being so fond of them when we lived in the US but now, when my wife brings back a boatload of them it’s like Christmas.

To those who voted for Duncan Hines chocolate cake mixes, is there a specific type that you would recommend. Here’s the list.

wilma's avatar

@PnL I like them all. If you want dark chocolate, the Devils food and Dark Chocolate fudge. The Swiss Chocolate and German Chocolate are lighter in color and flavor.

I made brownies the other day with Betty Crocker Fudge Brownie mix. It was the kind that comes with Hershey’s syrup in a packet. They were delicious!!!

@Allie – I bought a box of Duncan Hines brownie mix for now. But I’ll probably try that one next.
