If reincarnation happens, do you think our 'soul' will be 'us' whatever person we are in, or would we change?

Asked by fathippo (746points) October 1st, 2009

I’m not saying that’s what happens, obviously I don’t know, but d’you think that if we did get reincarnated – like entities or ‘souls’ who come in and out of this dimension or world – that the esscence of what that entity is, like out personalities or whatever, would stay the same, just inhabiting that body as a means of physical existance? Yeah… =)

we probably will never know

I think that a reincarnation of a person would not be the same as the original. Surely many elements of our current selves would remain, but the experiences that we have shape us so much. We would be similar, but we would not be the same. Neither purely our nature, nor our nurture, determines who we are, it is the combination of both.
unless one retains all memories from the previous life, in which case, we would be the same, as we had the same experiences.
Hooray for nature vs. nurture!

My mind can’t even begin to comprehend how this would work.

To answer that question, I think you’d have to give some serious thought to what makes you “you”. Ask yourself what parts of your personality, memories, behaviors, etc. aren’t dependent on that physical brain up in that head.

People’s personalities, memories and behaviors are effected all the time by injuries to the brain or chemical changes. If all that stuff could survive the death of the brain, than why can’t it stand up to a brain injury?

So what is the unchanging You that would move to another body? I can’t find anything at all.

Great answer @Harp!

Define “soul.” To me it doesn’t exist except in regards to music.

@AstroChuck I think what i mean is not just your conciousness, but what you imagine yourself being beyond biological existence, maybe, or what is the deepest part of you maybe. Like the part of you you can’t always feel when you’re swallowed up in society, but you withdraw and when surrounded with tranquility and beauty and music it’s like.. there (?). I guess that’s just brain chemicals and hormones though, which is kind of a bit depressing when you think that that’s all there is, but also reassuring… I really don’t get what I’m saying so I guess you don’t either?!

I have often thought about and done a lot of reading about this. My definition of soul would be the combination of mind, emotion and will which serves to make us unique and distinct from anyone else on the planet. I guess a shortcut way of describing it would be our personality ( but that is too simplistic a word to cover the full scope of what I mean).

What term does encompass all of what individuates one person from the next with an essence that is uniquely their own. To me, I think the term soul works uniquely well. What other term would do as well? And why would this be unable to survive physical death? Granted, this gets into metaphysical territory, and I don’t think I could prove reincarnation in an irrefutable way, but to me it’s as likely a theory as any other.

Many of these hints pointing in this direction are anecdotal, but I don’t think that necessarily invalidates them on that basis alone. I just prefer to keep an open mind to the possibility of reincarnation.

I think we have several (maybe many) reincarnations. My belief is that these different incarnations are connected by our “higher self” or “oversoul”. Sometimes we can have a “flash” glimpse of a former life.

After dyeing, soul leaves body. Depending upon the emotions at the time of death, next life is decided. For example, if we are thinking of God at the time of death, we get human life in next life. Anger gets Tiger or Lions or such animals, etc.

We cannot escape this cycle of death and rebirth, unless we completely merge with God. Only in human life we can do this. To get so, we surrender to God and pray and ask for his help. Easiest way is to hold his name for all the time, in our mind (bodily you may be in other things).

All such and other things are there in Holy ancient books or “Bhagavat Gita”.
Description of punishments after death are so frightening, that thinking of no one would like to make such mistakes.

do we all follow thw same GOD here?

prasad's avatar

Yeah, the same God!

There is a hymn in Sanskrit language, which says, as water fallen from the sky (rain) ultimately goes to ocean/sea, any God you pray it ultimately goes to the one God (Paramatma, addressed to as Keshav in the hymn).

@prasad @fedupwitcaddys Along those lines, there is a reference in ancient Peruvian rituals to the one who is “known to all, yet remain(s) unknowable,” who has “a thousand names, yet remain(s) unnameable”.

This is like saying a child born into unfortunate circumstances or with a very painful physical or mental illness has done something wrong in a past life to deserve it. I am in two minds about reincarnation .The thought of being born again as myself is too awful to contemplate. The idea that a merciful God says, that is over now you can be at peace , you did not lead a life that Jesus would have wanted you to , but you have learnt and it is over now those would be, precious words from a very forgiving loving Father and if God has mercy ,every human being would finally find peace when they die.

Apparently I read that in reincarnation your soul remembers its lessons and what it is to accomplish on this life plane of existance before it passes again.
This is keep up until all lessons are learned. ( humanity).
