Can I carry a bottle of perfume/cologne on airplane?

Asked by caly420 (546points) October 14th, 2009

I am flying out tomorrow morning to go to NY for a few days. Since I am only packing for 3 days I will not be checking any luggage, but will have my carry on bag and personal bag.

I know you can pack a quart sized plastic bag for shampoo, conditioner, etc. but could I put my bottle of perfume (baseball size) in there instead?

It might be better not to bring it and pick up a sample of something in NY.
It gives you a good excuse to go shopping too.

Not having it will probably make it easier to get through security.
Even if you can take it, they’ll likely want to talk to you about it.

I could not last week. Nothing over 3oz. But I made it through Philly and Denver security with no problem, it was in Cleveland that they made me toss my toiletries

See if you can go to a department store and ask them if you could buy an empty sample bottle off them—then have them spray your perfume into the sample. That’s how they make most of them anyway.

Only if it’s 3oz or less.

And that goes for your shampoo and conditioner and whatnot too. ALL of your liquids must be in bottles that are 3oz or less, and ALL of them must fit into one single quart sized bag.

@The_Compassionate_Heretic In my experience, there won’t be any talking. Exactly two possibilities exist: 1) The TSA folks will be inept and completely overlook it. 2) The TSA folks will follow the inept guidelines and simply tell you they’re tossing it. There will not, in any event, be any discussion between you and them.

Make sure it doesn’t contain any explosives.

Why would you?

I wouldn’t even bother taking it. Unless you want TSA throwing it away. I always am pissed when a new rule comes out and my stuff is thrown away.

I really don’t want to have to buy a new bottle up there, especially if I can’t bring it back for the same reason.

Mine is in a 2.5ounce bottle already…Souldn’t that be okay then?

haha I just feel naked without it on (bad I know ;) )

You could bring it as long as it’s not more than 3 ounces. Also it needs to be in a clear bag. I just flew to Vegas a couple weeks ago and they allowed it

What quart sized bottles of shampoo or anything? No, they will take that away. Everything is sample sized. And they will just take anything bigger. So, if you want to keep it, don’t bring it. Either put it in a tiny bottle, or pick up something in ny. I hear they have stores there.

@caly420 Yes, your 2.5 oz bottle is fine, as long as you put it in that quart-sized ziploc bag.

Okay….thanks everyone for responses.

^^haha this guy was definitely in front of me. I had no trouble at all using the 3–3-1 rule. Thanks again!!!

The easiest way is to take a solid perfume…no worries! Let me know if you’d like a recommendation.

I travel a lot….don’t chance it. What I do is pack my big bottle in my checked suitcase and put a tiny vial (cylinder) of the perfume in my ziploc. All you need is a bit anyway.
