Do the military predators caught on Dateline NBC get dishonorably discharged?

Asked by BBSDTfamily (6839points) October 18th, 2009

I’m watching one of the “To Catch A Predator” shows on Dateline NBC and there are 3 different military personnel (one a 1st lieutenant, one a sergeant) that were caught coming to meet up with young teens. They are arrested and charged w/ a felony. Does anyone know if this is a reason to be dishonorably discharged from the military? Does it make a difference whether the charges stick or not since they were on national television regardless? Just curious… they act as if their careers are over but it never says what happens to them.

I’m almost positive they get dishonorably discharged for a felony.

@stp630 Just for being charged w/ the felony, or would they have to be convicted of it in court? Most of the stories on there don’t follow up and give the judge’s decisions.

They’re facing felony charges so they are going to be subject to a trial by courts-martial unless a plea bargain or deal has been reached beforehand. I believe they can have civilian attorney representation of their own choosing or have JAG (Judge Advocate General) personnel representing them. Because of the nature of the crime, they are certainly headed toward a dishonorable discharge. Even if the charges don’t stick, they and their military career are now tainted forever and essentially over for all intents and purposes. The smart play would probably be for them to seperate from the military once their current ETS (Expiration Term of Service) arrives.
