Can you recommend any methods to help me fix my xbox's RROD problem?

Asked by Ame_Evil (3051points) October 22nd, 2009

Hello, recently my xbox has fallen ill to the RROD. I am not sure of the exact reasons, but I’m guessing leaving the xbox on the carpet (after moving to a new house and being careless in its location) wasn’t a good idea. Nor leaving the power pack there either.

My xbox isn’t under warranty, and I don’t really want to send it into a shop to get fixed when I can probably just sell it for parts and buy a new one for cheaper.

What I would like to know is if anyone has fixed their xbox from this problem themselves, and what methods they used. I would prefer it if it was something a complete beginner (ie me) could do, and if it was a cheap solution.

Thanks for the help.

Craigslist. Simply put. Choke down the ~$70 they’ll charge you, and do it. I’ve seen quite a few fixed right before my eyes (friends consoles) and they’ve never had an issue. They all still work unbelievably! I was skeptical at first, but it just… worked.

Also check out the power pack. Reboot the power pack a few times, leave it unpulgged for 10 minutes, and make sure all connections are tight. When the power pack begins to mess up, you’ll get rings too (not sure if it’s two, or three, but it does throw rings). That spooked me once or twice before as well.

Thanks for the advice. I would rather give repairing it myself a go before having to resort to having someone else do it. I will try looking at the powerpack though – my friend has one that I can try to see if that is the problem.

I used the penny trick then the towel trick and mine worked.

@sweetteaindahouse I saw this trick on youtube and wanted to give it a shot but I was uncertain despite all the decent responses. Do you do the penny trick and then after you have finished re-mantling the xbox do the towel trick before starting the xbox in order to get it working?

@Ame_Evil Well we tried just doing the penny trick by itself. My xbox worked once then quit working. We then did the towel trick and it worked.

many B&M stores sell refubed xboxen for $70 and include a year warranty.

provided it is the correct hardware revision it can easily be hacked to run XBMC

Does anyone think that english pennies will be able to do the same trick or are they not as thick as american ones (in which case i’ll need one more?).
