Could you please recommend some good books as an introduction to economics?

Asked by bezdomnaya (1440points) November 3rd, 2009

I would like to read two or three good books that are an introduction to the field of economics. I have a fair knowledge of mathematics (algebra, calculus, a bit of stats), so they do not have to be for the math illiterate. I would also like something that takes into account the current economic situation of the past year (or at least something that isn’t outdated because of the current situation).

Freakonomics would be a really interesting read and The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman is another good one

Freakonomics is good. For a more technical look I would suggest this. But it is a textbook and is spendy.

Could you guys also give a bit of reasoning behind why these are good books (i.e. covers all the major models, not outmoded, etc.)? Thank you!

Freakonomics deals with really abstract stuff. Like how the relationship between pimps and prostitutes works. It is a good read but isn’t technical. The book I Linked to will teach you what a year one econ student would learn. It has all the curves and graphs and explains everything pretty well.

And by everything I mean stuff that econ 201,202,203 covers. It is enough that you will have a better understanding of economics but it isn’t comprehensive. But you will be able to understand every article in the paper relating to economics and know more than 95% of the population.

What about The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith?

I have read The Wealth of Nations. You need a good background to read it. I had to read it my Junior year in college. It is good but it is a bad place to start.
