Sounds like you are from England – Welcome to Fluther! I don’t have a good answer for you; seems like each columnist that I read has a different take on it. Some of the thinking seems to be in the States that we are out of the woods in terms of going into a Great Depresssion scenario but that it will be a slow and possibly jobless recovery.

The recession is already easing, but since employment is a lagging indicator, people will feel the effects strongly for some time to come.

I don’t think it will be over for regular people for at least a couple of years. unemployment is still rising.

Technically it is over in the United States. GDP was up 3.5 percent in Q3 and a recession is defined as to consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

But the employment statistics are indeed looking grim.

It is not going to end soon, it is going to get worse.

This is sort of the calm before the storm.

@ChazMaz why do you say that?

Well, we haven’t even begun to reach the depression stage, even though I view it as we are in one. I prefer to be optimistic regarding the current state of affairs, but there is very little that gives me a glimmer of hope to hold on to. The previous administrations and the current one have allowed jobs to go offshore, let cheap illegal labor take a significant share of jobs; we really don’t manufacture much of anything more, the transnational companies choose to to move off shore to pollute and hide their profits in lax regions of the world.
Most of the banks are zombies, the fed is monetizing the debt from what I figure with money that is sent other central banks to buy our debt. I personally think that in a year or two the Fed and Treasury and GS will no longer be able to hold the charade, or Ponzi Scheme from the American public any longer than we will be Weimerized. The Great Depression will look like a walk in the park.
My prognostication is recession/depression far longer than I care to even think about.
Our currency will become worthless, as it is becoming every day, so it’s best you get as much gold and silver as possible, otherwise the people that created the mess will.
We are broke to the tune of trillions of dollars,as planned.

What about Canada? I know we had better luck with our banking and mortgage systems.

@Garebo That sounds a little hysterical to me. We’re already in a recovery according to the metrics. Do you have inside information? If so, please enlighten us.

dpworkin's avatar

Oh, never mind. I think I’ve dealt with your wack job Fiat Money conspiracy theories before.

Garebo's avatar

I hope so, but that what I think. I think there is trouble presently and in the horizon.
I follow a few people, and friends in finances that have been uncanny in there predictions in the past and I respect there opinion. Yes, some can be very easy to dismiss as whack jobs.
