What is this toy and where can I get it?

Asked by Snarp (11272points) November 20th, 2009

Saw this really cool toy, but I don’t know what it’s called, so I can’t google it. It’s flat colored translucent plastic shapes, just under a quarter inch thick. They have magnets in all edges, so you can put them together and build all kinds of things. There are squares (about 2 and a half inches across), equilateral triangles, isosceles triangles, maybe others – I didn’t see the others. What are these things and where can I get them?

Are they Magnetix?

Snarp's avatar

@nzigler No, these are totally flat.

@wilma No, simpler than that, no small parts.

@Les That’s very similar.

There are magnetic tangrams of various sorts.

See this list I think you are looking for either Magformers or Magna magnetic building toy sets.

They should be at your local hobby or teacher store…BUT…from personal experience, AMAZON beats the local prices by a wide margin if you get free shipping.

@SpatzieLover Thanks! This was the one I saw. Lots of cool stuff. Wish this was what they sold at Target, Toys R Us, etc. instead of lame battery operated, Dora the Explorer branded garbage.

@Snarp Our Target has some nice stuff, but these types of toys are always at our local teacher shops. Hope you kids like ‘em!

Now that @SpatzieLover has given me the name I found the manufacturer website and they are sold at the local museum gift shop. I’m certain online prices will beat that, but I might buy there just to support them.

@SpatzieLover I can always find a few things at Target, but I’ve been getting their Christmas toy fliers in the mail and everything in there is awful except the Legos.

@Snarp First of all GREAT job supporting your museum. We try to do the same whenever possible. Second, that National flier from Target SUCKS! I don’t know why they don’t make certain every Target has Lincoln logs, Playmobil and other quality toys. It must be due to the small size of some of their stores. Both of the Targets I shop at have quality toys available including wooden Thomas stuff.

EDIT: Btw, I checked the store locator for my locale, and those Magna’s are only available at the teacher stores by me…not even a hobby store. :(

I bought them for my grand kids. They’re called Magna-Tiles They are one of their favorite toys when they come to my house.

Those things look awesome! I think my kids might be a bit too old for them now. :(

Got a hundred piece set for my son and a fifty piece set for my nephew. Can’t wait until Christmas morning!
