If you have an iPhone, did you pay the $69 for the extra year of limited warranty? If you've had it less than a year, are you planning to do so when the date arrives?

Asked by Buttonstc (27605points) November 27th, 2009 from iPhone

I have about a week or so to decide, so I thought I would tap the collective on this.

What were the factors which influenced your decision either way?

I don’t own an iPhone but I would definitely pay for an extra year of warranty if I did. Quite a few of my friends have had theirs die.

I did not. I’ve had my iPhone since December of 2007 and haven’t had a single problem. My wife even ran hers through the washer and it was fine a few days later.

I did for my original iPhone on the last day, and it really paid off, because my WiFi antenna died in the second year and I got it replaced in two minutes. It probably was caused by moisture from a wicked storm I got caught in, and now they can tell and won’t cover if the problem is moisture. I’ve also had batteries die early on me. If you can afford it, it’s probably worthwhile.

I have an iPhone and I’m gonna buy the extra year warranty. It’s definitely worth it because the iPhone has a lot of glitches and you never know when it’s gonna crash

I got the extra year when I bought my iPhone last december. also because my friend was selling it to me, so I was helping him out with the commission. I haven’t needed the warranty at all yet, but who knows what the next year will bring.

I work for AT&T, I’m not getting paid for your apple care, basically it gives you customer support for the extra year and also covers all internal issues with the phone. If the touch screen or any of the softwear within the phone fails it is covered under the warranty, also the battery is covered, without the warranty a battery would roughly cost $90 to replace, the batteries usually start going bad about a year and a half after purchase, kinda shady as far as I’m concerned, but this is just from what I’ve seen based on observations as an employee. If you take good care of your phone and don’t do excessive downloading or browsing you should be fine, otherwise it would probably be a good purchase.

I bought the Apple care for our OG iPhones, and will do so again for the 3GSes we upgraded to. My son had his OG device replaced under warranty a few times, while mine only needed replacement once – but it was after the first year was up. My 3GS has already been replaced once. It’s definitely a worthwhile investment.

Well, I don’t know what would be the cutoff limit to qualify for “excessive downloading” but I bet I’m either close to it or well over it.

I am a severe appaholic with all 9 screens filled up and well over a thousand free apps sitting in my iTunes :)

I also do most of my fluthering on the iPhone so I’m online with a lot which I presume counts as browsing.

I just wasn’t aware that that would figure into the equation and am still not sure I understand quote why. I was thinking more along the lines of physical stuff.

But has ATT done any kind of studies on iPhone failure rates and causes. Or have you seen in your personal experience working at ATT that there were a lot of problems caused by too much browsing or downloading.

Just curious.

Ignore the obvious typos and the last useless phrase at the end. Dang iPhone has a mind of it’s own and no way to proofread ones entire post.

@Buttonstc: No… but for several minutes you can go back and edit.

I have 11 pages of Apps; though not all are full.

Buttonstc's avatar

Yeah, I know about the edit, but you can’t scroll down. If you’re typo is in the first five or six lines you’re ok, but the lack of scrolling prevents more.

Is your phone jailbroken? The regular iPhone only allows for 9 screens. Or does the s one allow for two more?

hearkat's avatar

@Buttonstc: No, I am not jailbroken. I have the 3GS, which has allowed me to have 11 pages, some have told me that it’s increased to 12 with an update, but I haven’t tried it, yet. I recall the OG (original) iPhone had up to 10 pages.
If you touch and hold the editing area to get the magnifying lens to place the cursor, you can scroll down by dragging the cursor to the bottom (or top) of the edit box.
