In the movie "25th Hour" why doesn't the Ed Norton character kill himself instead of going to prison?

In “25th Hour” Ed Norton is facing a long time in prison. He considers killing himself but eventually shows up at prison voluntarily for his sentence. Why did he not kill himself instead?

Uhh, because he values his life? Maybe he’ll be in prison for a long time, but someday he will get out.

I haven’t seen 25th Hour. Is there maybe a reason (other than the typical ones) for him to really, really not want to go?

Because that’s what it said in the script.

Well actually the end is ambigous. At the end there is a dream or ending sequence where either he shows up for prison or he escapes to texas to set up a family. I think it’s up to the viewer to decide which one is the dream and which one is real.

One of my favourite movies of all time :)
