What languages do I need to know to create an online 2D shooting game?

Asked by Justa (4points) December 14th, 2009 from iPhone

Right now I know a decent amount of C++ and I’m learning the basics of Dark GDK as my graphics engine, but what languages do I need to learn to get online multiplayer functionality in my game? I was thinking PHP and MySql, but tell me your thoughts because I’m still a little confused.

Why do you suggest Actionscript?

I would go with Python so you can use the Twisted framework.

It depends on what exactly you mean by “online”

Ifyou want to build a smaller game that streams via your browser then Actionscript is the way to go imo. If you want to build a downloadable game that connects to the web through the game itself then Python would be a good choice.

@drClaw Are you secretly me?

What drClaw said.

And unless you’re planning on spending the rest of your life working on this, I highly recommend enlisting the help of another, so you can focus on the code side of things, and they could either help with that, or just focus on the graphics side of things.

In any case, if you press ahead with this and don’t give up within the month, kudos to you.
