Which vitamins do you use daily & why?

Asked by minolta (328points) December 22nd, 2009

I’m doing research on which vitamins I should take for better skin, joints and overall physical and mental health.

Which ones do you take and why.

Thanks.

One A Day for Men. It’s a good overall multi-vitamin and it’s affordable. Has extra selenium which is good for the male reproductive system.

Vitamin C, just to keep myself away from common diseases. It really a big loss for me to miss work or reduce productivity because I got colds.

Urea cream is the best. I mean, nothing is better than smearing urine all over yourself… As you can tell, I think vitamins and supplements are a giant scam (except for replacement vitamins for people with a true deficiency, calcium/vitamin D for some people, and prenatal vitamins). Everyone else who eats a normal, balanced, fortified diet, no benefit. None, zero, zilch. Although, the placebo effect might be real…

I’ll take an iron tablet here and there. I have been told I am deficient in iron, and look pale sometimes. I don’t like to take a multi-vitamin, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don’t take any because they’re really just a scam to sucker people into spending their money. As @shilolo said, eating a normal healthy diet provides you with all you need,

The one exception, however, is calcium. Can’t get enough of that stuff.

I take calcium with vitamin D because my bone density is not what it should be. It’s difficult to get the recommended amount for menopausal women unless you drink vast quantities of milk on a daily basis.

I take one Centrum Silver as insurance, just in case I am missing something in my diet!

Vitamin E. Its really great for my skin, nails and hair. Plus it doesn’t stay in your system like so many vitamins. You usually will piss out the excess. Unless you go really crazy with it.

@Pandora FYI, vitamin E is fat soluble so it actually does accumulate in your system and is not excreted in the urine.

I’ve done the research and find the GNC Soloday Multivitamin to be a great vitamin. Though somewhat expensive, Drugstore.com has GNC sales with free shipping frequently.

none, and because they make me sick. I take enough pills.

@Violet – that is why I stick with plain old Centrum. A lot of brands upset my stomach but it never happened with Centrum. Maybe they are sugar pills, hehehehe.

Actually speaking of sugar, I drank a coke today and I must be getting so un-used to caffeine and sugar, it made me all shaky and wierd for a while, I had chills and then was cold. I had a bit or a sore throat this morning so I thought maybe I was getting the flu. I took a couple of advil and within a couple of hours feel fine except really tired, which could be the result of coming down from a sugar high.

Much as I love coke, I am going to try really hard not to drink it anymore. I didn’t like that shaky feeling.

@rooeytoo you can always drink caffeine free (diet?) coke.
That reaction to Coke sounds very strange. I think it has 28 grams of sugar, which is an adults’ daily value. Not sure about the caffeine levels. I know it’s less than coffee though.
I drink coffee everyday, with a little bit of sugar. I’m guessing you don’t drink coffee?
I was taking One-A-Day, but all vitamins make me nauseous, just by the taste

rooeytoo's avatar

Thanks @Violet – that caffeine free diet coke tastes terrible to me!!! I usually have a sprite zero for my nightly treat. Nope no coffee for me, I never developed the taste for it.

Yeah it was a bit weird, but I had swum 2.5k about an hour before, so maybe it was a combination of everything. I just had dinner and feel fine now.

Pills alone won’t do the job. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and salads. Pills are only a supplement.

@shilolo Thanks for the tip. You learn something everyday. I always thought it was water soluble. No worries, I only take one 400 every other day and sometimes less. I’m horrible about remembering to take pills. I use to take gingseng for memory but I would forget to take it. LOL

Been taking a one day vitamins for years…approx 15 yrs! Very seldom get sick…have not taken an antibiotic in years!

I take some prenatal pills, basically Flinestones Complete. (easier on my stomach). When not pregnant, I sometimes take Vitamin C or B12, but I really don’t need to supplement Vit C too often.
My mother takes a plethora of vitamins and it really concerns me because I know she doesn’t inform the doctors of all these pills, and god only knows what mixing them all together and with prescription meds can do. Grrr.

GNC Mega Men multivitamins for my health.
Bee pollen for allergies.
Calcium because I don’t drink milk.

Fish oil (heart). Aspirin (heart). Folic Acid (stroke prevention). VitaminC (cold prevention). Generic Multivitamin. In addition to the blood pressure meds, tranquilizers, paroxetene, et cetera, ad nauseum.
