What are some ways to record TV shows besides Tivo?

Asked by mathwhiz1 (264points) December 23rd, 2009

One of my favorite TV shows to watch is Wheel of Fortune, but the bad thing is that it always comes on when we are having dinner. I wish it came on in the afternoon like Jeopardy does.

Do you have a Mac? Elgato eyeTV.

DVD-Recorder ? You can buy an old VCR at a garage sale. OR you could hire a court sketch artist !

Yeah, @simpleD . If you use an eyetv tuner with a Mac you can record shows onto your computer using the tuner and eyetv software. It works pretty well unless you have digital cable and are running it through a digital cable set top box, at least I haven’t figured out a way around it. It still records great, but you can’t program it to record certain shows at certain times, because with the digital set top box it’s always Channel 4. You can only have it record the channel that you have set your cable to. And BTW, @simpleD, if I’m wrong about that please let me know. Please, please, please!!!

@lillycoyote: the only solution I know of is to use an IR Blaster to allow the eyeTV to change the cable box channel.
I don’t actually own an eyeTV – I’ve come close to getting one, though.

@simpleD Thanks so much. I’ll have to look into IR Blaster. The eyetv tuner and software works very well, and if it weren’t for the digital cable box it would essentially allow me to use my Mac like a Tivo, but the box makes that part of it not work.
