What is the difference among these three: Love, Hate, and Indifference?

Asked by Holden_Caulfield (1139points) January 10th, 2010

Some say the opposite of Love is Hate… but I beg to differ. There is a fine line between love and hate because they both involve feelings and emotions… BUT indifference is something more. It lacks feeling and emotion which is opposite of both love AND hate, thus it must be the opposite of at least love,,, Thoughts?

love and hate are pretty well diametrically opposed though they flow from the same well. Indifference on the other hand is “opposite” from both in that it’s the absence of emotion, making it a different beast altogether.

love = sweet
hate = sour
indifference = buick

Hate and love are different sides of the same coin. The picture on each side is different but you are still “attached” to the other side.

I feel that indifference is the opposite of love and hate.

And is when you aren’t on the same coin anymore…in fact you aren’t even in the same coin purse.

the words being self descriptive,
could it be that there are 3X the letters in indifference?

Passion, indifference/apathy has none. I’ve always believed apathy is the opposite of love.

They are indistinguishable.

Love and hate are opposites.
Indifference, though, can be just as bad as hate.
Take the Holocaust, for example. Many people hated the Jews. So they killed them. Many people loved the Jews (or simply their fellow man) and tried to save the.
But there was also a very large number of people who were indifferent. Because of their lack of love, they let the situation get worse. It basically follows a saying,“If you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem.”

Love is pulling someone out of the gutter.
Hate is calling 911 for help and walk away.
Indifference is just walking by.

Indifference is the sign that you are really over the person you loved, then hated.

T.S. Eliot has said (in Four Quartets), The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference” by which I think he means that love and hate both contain caring while indifference is not caring at all.

You don’t want to fuck anything when you are indifferent.
