When you can't stop thinking about something embarassing, what do you do?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) January 21st, 2010

Have you ever had a time where you’ve done something embarrassing, and then was not able to stop thinking about it for the rest of the day? How did you get over that? Let’s say it ruins your entire day as well, the embarrassing moment just replaying over and over in your head. What would you do to stop thinking about it?

I either write, or accost my nose with one of my favorite scents. Both are strong and steal my attention from that one unfortunate moment.

This happens to me a few times every now and then. Just take a nap/go to sleep if its late, then go do something randomly exciting, like going to Six Flags.

I find a distraction. Like a TV show, or a good conversation, interesting book, the latest news, whatever takes my mind somewhere else. I hate when that happens though!

Go to sleep or watch a good movie to get the thought off my mind

@lilikoi, I should be studying for finals, but the nap sounds really good right now :P

@curiouscat Ugh finals! Good luck! If there is one thing I don’t miss about college, that would be it.

@Axemusica I was laughing so hard at that, I had trouble clicking the Great Answer button!

Best thing to do Is stop thinking about it. Realize that it’s not as big a deal as you make it to be and no one (With the least bit of intelligence) is going to think lesser of you. I make an ass out of myself all the time doing/saying obnoxious (not obscene) things. But that’s part of who I am and people like that about me. Laugh at yourself from time to time! you know your going to laugh about it sometime down the road anyway! :-)

@lilikoi, lol. thank you! Except I’m only a senior in high school. ;P

Ok, from all these answers, I’ve decided I’m going to take a break from studying and have a nap. When I wake up, maybe I’ll realize that it wasn’t a big deal. ;).. and then continue studying

Consider how important this thought is. Imagine this one thought in the trillions of others that will pass through your head. Consider your place among the billions of other people on this planet. Consider this one planet in scale to the others in the universe. Now how significant is that thought?

It is a insane to think you can undo the past. I simply apologize to the cat and try to move on.

Axemusica's avatar

@johnpowell I imagine your cat is probably pretty confused, lol.

Sure, we all have, and that’s the thing: WE ALL HAVE. I’m reasonably sure that despite the old saying, no one ever _really_died of embarrassment. Probably nobody else is thinking about the incident anymore, why should you? Besides, there’ll be another one down the road, and another…

I like to think of how it could have been worse. Then, see? Not so bad at all, in comparison!

I find a way to laugh at myself for whatever I did and then focus on something else.
No matter what it was, it is not the end of the world!
