What shotgun should I buy for skeet shooting?

Asked by coolbeans (176points) January 21st, 2010

My Dad and I are looking for a shotgun in the three grand price range. We were looking at a few Winchesters and some Brownings. No specific gauge. Any suggestions?

winchester – holds its resale value

Honestly, I know very little about skeet shooting. But I adore my Winchester Model 12 16 gauge pump, and I’d recommend Winchester as well. 16 or 20 gauge for sure, no reason to go as big as a 12 and you might get laughed at for using a .410. Good luck!

I also dont know much about skeet shooting but on the Olympics they all seem to have Double Barrels. Try one of those. I dont know any particular brands but this looks interesting.

I vote for Browning, mine has always treated me well. I prefer a Browning BPS. For Skeet Shooting, you definitely need a 12 gauge, 20 gauges are for little kids (they just don’t have the range and power you need for all skeet shooting shots). A 16 gauge would be nice, but they are not as common, and it will be much more difficult to find shells for them (unless you shop for them online).

I’ve been skeet shooting for many years, PM me if you have questions.

I use a Browning Citori and it has given me excellent results for the price. I bought my wife a custom made Belgian shotgun a few years ago, a superb Francotte 20 ga. But that is about three times your price range.

Benelli makes some fine shotguns for sporting clays in your price range.
