Is it worth buying an HD-DVD player for $50?

Asked by Kadaj (24points) March 1st, 2008 from iPhone

Xbox 360 has dropped their hd-dvd player to $50 and the price is very tempting. Also they have an offer for 5 free movies after mail in rebate. What should I do? Should I pass on this great offer

The reason the price is so low is because HDDVD dropped from the format war. It was announced two weeks ago by the company that made HDDVD, Toshiba. They will not be making HDDVDs any more; the winning format is Blu-Ray.

Buying HDDVD discs now is for enthusiasts or collectors now.

No, save your $50, hd-DVD just lost and Toshiba isn’t making anymore. Although, you could buy it and use it as an antique!

I would say buy if you want the movies. You get 5 HD movies at $10 each, try and do that with Blu-Ray. Also the HD-DVD players make excellent upconverting DVD players; however, I do not know how the Xbox drive fares at the task. Plus, I would bet you could get a bunch of movies on the cheap over the next few months. I am looking for a standard set-top player at that price.
