What advice do you have for ending nervous habits?

I consider myself a compulsive picker. I can’t keep my hands away from myself, and always end up tearing at hangnails, blemishes, and especially my lips. My appearance is suffering as a result of it. Any ideas for things to do with my hands, or mantras that have worked for you?

Mavala makes “polish” that goes on your hands and nails to get you to stop biting them. It tastes bitter so you will not want to have them in your mouth.

Oh my goodness I did that so much, I still pick at my nails and hangnails. Occasionally my lips. I try just moving my fingers around or holding something like pencils and drumming on my legs. Doodling helps too. Just something that keeps your hands busy so that they’re not picking.

Ah! I know what you are talking about and I hate it. Really, for myself it was just will power. When you notice yourself doing it, put your hands in your lap or sit on them. Just make sure to catch yourself whenever you are doing it, and give yourself a mental scolding. Eventually you should just stop doing it.

I’ve found that the most effective way to get rid of a bad habit is to transmute it into another habit, one less noticeable and less harmful. If you need something to do with your hands, try playing with your hair instead of touching your face and nails.

When I quit smoking,there were times when I had to resist the urge minute by minute for an entire da/days.It was very hard.There are no magic pills to take,you just have to do it!you can do it:)

Keep worry beads in your purse or pocket.

Or the similar Chinese stress balls.

When my daughter was very young and nibbled on her nails, I gave her a green plastic napkin ring on a leather thong to wear around her neck. She used to chew on it.

You canwear a rubber band around your wrist and give yourself a “ping” with it every time you have the impulse to pick at yourself. Aversion therapy.
