What is the best red wine to drink with cheese and crackers?

One you like. If you’re really into food pairings, then it will depend what cheese.

With wine, I’m a big proponent of just picking what tastes good to you and serving that with whatever you choose .

Best as in inexpensive ($6 to $9 a bottle)
AND delicious I would say….......Blackstone Merlot-Cab blend.

It’s warming and slightly spicey. And tastes even better while enjoyed relaxing on a sofa next to a fireplace.

Port is really good with wine, full bodied, it goes with everything!

Agree totally with @janbb. These days, the old “rules” of red vs. white are lax, if not existent. Especially since there are so many more inexpensive but good wines available. Go for what you like. In fact, put down several bottles with different tastes.

oh great question. I have worked at a winery for 6 years now…

My personal favorite is an aged chardonnay of a year or more. It also depends on what you like, white or red. For a white, a chardonnay works. For a red I agree with @spiritual: with a port. This is a sweeter wine almost like “ice wine.” When consuming cheese and a port style wine, the flavors clash really well together

Depending on the cheeses you can’t go wrong with a good Rioja. Best to keep some mineral water handy as wee if you intend to distinguish between cheeses. You can find Marques de Riscal and Conde de Valdemar at BevMo and they are cheaper than they should be.

I’ve never enjoyed any white wines with cheese. Maybe a very dry one, but most are too sweet for cheese in my opinion. Port goes great with dark chocolate, but I also think it’s too sweet for cheese. I prefer a bold dry red, like a cab with a sharp cheese. Merlot works well, too, and adds a spicy note.

Bottom line: drink what tastes good to YOU with cheese. I don’t mix sweet and savory much, which is why my wine/cheese tastes are as they are. Obviously, @mass_pike4 is far different from me. You are likely different from both of us.

I like a good quality Chianti with almost all cheeses but especially dryer cheeses like Parmesan. Frankly, though, I prefer whites with most cheeses especially oaky Chardonnays. For a 12 year old cheddar a nice light colored beer is the thing that hits the spot. Lastly, inexpensive champagnes or sparkling wines do great with most cheese.

I would not recommend a chardonnay (white wine) when the question asks for a good red wine.
My favorites these days are the California Syrah, or the German Muskattrollinger, or the Chilean Carmenere. They all enhance the flavor of cheeses.

@YARNLADY : The Chianti is the red, the balance were my opinions. Sorry to cause you to read a couple extra words not germane to the Q. I’ll try to do better next time.
