Do you hold your pinky up when you hold a glass? Why do you do it?

Asked by LuckyGuy (43690points) March 19th, 2010

I was at a restaurant today and noticed a woman holding her drinking glass with her pinky extended. Looking around the room I noticed others. I only saw women do it, no men. I can barely extend my pinky when I’m not holding anything. Trying to do so with a full drinking glass is courting disaster. I can’t see any practical reason for it. Do you?
If you are one of those types, what’s up with holding the pinky up?

It’s an unconscious habit. My dad does it. I must have picked it up as a child.

No, but I think my mom does it. I don’t know why. I feel like I read somewhere that some people used to think this was a sign of ‘class’.

I can’t even move my fingers that way. Is the ability it genetic?
If I put my hand flat on the table I can lift all my other fingers except the pinky.
I guess I just ain’t got no culcha’.

Now that’s a bit much with the pinky. There’s a proper way to hold a wine glass and holding up your pinky isn’t necessary. It’s like over-the-top etiquette at that point which of course requires immediate mocking.
If it’s incidental because of biology there’s not much you can do. Sometimes the pinky just goes up.

Yes, just by habit I guess.

It helps your hand balance when you’re holding a glass that’s too big/ too heavy

As I type I have my pinky up. When I use the pad thingy on my computer my pinky is up. Ahh. Now I’m all weirded out.

Because the glass is cold.

I’ve got another question for all you pinky lifters. If you put your hand on the table with your fingers spread out, can you lift your pinky?
How have I managed to got through life without this critical ability?

I do it. I don’t know why though, it’s completely unconscious. I’ve been told it makes me look very bourgeois, so I can see why some would do it on purpose. For me, it’s probably a genetic trait, because my dad does it too, as do many men in his family.

My pinky sticks out when I drink things sometimes, but I don’t mean to or even realize I’m doing it most of the time. And yeah, I can lift my pinky up when my hand is spread on a flat surface. Then again, I have the ability to push my fingers together, completely vertically, while both of my palms are completely horizontal.

Cause Patrick said it was fancy.

I do. I have no idea why or when I started. I think I’ve always done it. It’s habit now. When I try not to do it- boom – it goes right back up. I’ve been made fun of for it before. Someone thought I was trying to appear ‘classy’. I said class doesn’t reside in the pinky.

I don’t. Unless it’s a short stem and there’s no where to put it. then it just hangs lose. Never straight out, I don’t think.

I also find that sometimes I close my left eye when I drink hard liquor. I think it might be either the fumes, or because I’ve been hit in the eye by sliding ice cubes.

I’m doomed to eating hamburgers for life.

@DrasticDreamer I can’t imagine my digits bending that way. Quite skill.

Class. Simply put. ;)
