Are blackouts and crying fits common with post traumatic stress disorder?

Asked by ducky_dnl (5384points) March 30th, 2010

When I was growing up I was physically abused. Well, I’m going back to the gym tomorrow. I’m going to be staying to myself, but ever since I got hit the last time I have been depressed. When I got hit, I felt like I was literally getting beaten. I had a freak out fit and literally started crying and banging on the walls when I got to my house. At the gym, I blacked out, but when I came to… I felt like I was going to kill him. Lately, there has been a severe pain in the left temple of my head. I’m afraid that if I do go back and someone hits me again, that I’ll have a freak out fit there… or worse. What should I do?

Someone hit you while you were at the gym? I’m confused.

Go to the doctor. Both of those symptoms CAN be related to PTSD.

@DrasticDreamer Yes, I call it a gym, but it’s like a club type thing. They have basketball courts, pools, workout places, etc. I was in the basketabll area when I got hit.

Accidentally hit, right? If not, talk to someone who runs the club and explain to them what happened, that way it absolutely won’t happen again. And I do not suggest going back to the club until you’ve talked to someone there who can help, especially if someone hit you on purpose.

As for your reaction, yes, it seems as if you might have PTSD. I would suggest talking to a therapist, if possible.

Who has been hitting you? How old are you? What is your relationship to the person(s) that has/have been hitting you?

@DrasticDreamer No, he purposely did it. I’ve already seen numerous counselors, that’s why I still go. For PTSD, Depression, Anxiety and everything else.

I have PTSD too. My therapist told me that sometimes I dissociate. I have had times when I couldn’t remember how I got home for instance, and in therapy I’ve dissociated when recounting things. Of course only your therapist can know if a blackout of memory is from a dissociative state. It could be a physical symptom from you being hit in the head. Since you have been diagnosed with PTSD, I suggest your google dissociation and PTSD and see if it sounds like what you experienced.

Flashbacks and emotions coming out of nowhere triggered by an event is typical PTSD.

You should at least document it with the police. Did anyone see this happen? Would they be willing to go with you to confirm the incident? This is not acceptable, and is against the law. It sounds like this happened a while ago, but it’s not too late to go to the police to tell them what happened. If there are witnesses, you might still be able to file charges. Regardless, if it happens again, you have started a paper trail, and these people now have a reputation. If someone ever hits you again on purpose, for heavens sake, please call the police.

Do tell someone at the gym what you are going through so they can assist you if you blackout. Get a game plan if you choose to keep working out there.
