Does anyone recognize this haircut?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) April 8th, 2010

A guy at my work today seemed to be of arabic descent. He had the middle of his head shaved. No surgery marks or anything. It looked like it had a cultural significance. Anyone know what I’m talking about?

Someone superglued his hat on?

I have seen what you describe, but intermittently – I have always thought that it was just a fashion – like a goatee or similar.

sounds like tonsure—but why?

Tonsured – definition of Tonsured by the Free Online Dictionary…
The act of shaving the head or part of the head, especially as a preliminary to becoming a priest or a member of a monastic order.

During middle ages, priests and monks would shave the crown of their heads. I have no idea if that’s still practiced today. You don’t know if this guy is a muslim or not.

Would you be asking the same question if the person was Asian or African American? By the way, no offence intended.

I live in Amsterdam, which has a fairly high percentage of Muslim residents. Many of my colleagues and daily contacts are Muslim. I’ve never seen anything like what you’ve described.

Secondly, I find it interesting that you add “Arabic appearance” with “weird hairstyle” and come up with “Muslim religious practice.” I don’t think I’d come to that same conclusion.

My suggestion is to try this, “Dude! What’s up with your hair?” Who knows, it might answer your question.

He did not duck fast enough when the cruise missiles zoomed past his head !

@Pretty_Lilly See, that’s the kind of shit I hate: an immediate association between the Muslim religion and violence. Grow up, why don’t you?

@PapaLeo “AND” you need to get an education so you can comprehend sarcasm,it has been proven by the psychiatric community that people with low levels of intelligence and/or a low IQ have a hard time comprehending sarcasm, metaphors & analogies !
Even though Muslims are not my cup of tea ! What I meant: was a reference to Muslim countries being in a constant state of war ! Their daily life is being in the front lines !
Just as Lebanon was in the 80’s,
Let me know if you need the coloring book version of this statement and I will send it to you so you can comprehend my point !!

@PapaLeo: “Grow up, why don’t you?” <== I do not believe the adult thing to do is pretend there is no “association between the Muslim religion and violence”. If you wish to bury your head in the sand so that no one calls you names this is your right but it is not adult. Muslim majority countries on the whole have much less freedom than non-Muslim countries and the growing population of Muslims in Europe will begin to threaten freedoms there during our lifetimes.

& your quite positive he wasn’t just going bald?

Theby's avatar

Well said, @PapaLeo. @Pretty_Lilly might be pretty on the outside but sounds ugly racist on the inside. @Pretty_Lilly, You are inferring that @PapaLeo is unintelligent and you then go on to say Lebanon was in strife in the 80s! Perhaps you need a lesson or two. Lebanon has always been in strife, especially three or four years ago. Also, sarcasm is the lowest form of “wit.” Attempting to “make fun” of these poor war-torn people is not my idea of fun.

Wouldn’t it have been better to phrase the question ‘What is up with this guy’s hair?’. You might have added he had an “Arabic” appearance, but the rest smacks of racism, whether or not you intended.

Most of the strife in the Middle East can be traced back to Western colonial powers trying to exert their influence. Just as much can be blamed on the radicals and extremists such as Bin Laden and company.

Did any of you, that seem to have a problem with Muslims know that within true Islam, not what was been hijacked and corrupted by extremists, that it is an important duty to protect ‘People of the Book’ (meaning Xians and Jews)?

Also, do you realize that many Muslims are outside of the Middle East? Aren’t even Arabic, at all?

Seems to me, and I will make the rare assumption, that your views on Muslims have been coloured by extremists. I think you need to learn there are bad apples in every bunch and re-educate yourself on what Islam and Muslims are.

DarkScribe's avatar

I was about to add to this but rahm_sahriv has basically covered it.

The real Muslim world is not a place to be feared by Christians. The Muslims depicted in a lot of media are no more real Muslims than the Swastika waving extreme right wing, white supremacist Christians are typical of the average Christian. I have spent many years living among Muslims – including in Baghdad when I was in my twenties and it has been only recently that I have seen a change in attitude toward Christians – in response to Christian antagonism.

As for the hair, as people have already said, it seems like a tonsure, which you would mostly find on Xtians who are monks or priests. Could just be he is going bald though. If you see him again, ask him.

Ltryptophan's avatar

So sorry if I offended any of you! I was merely seeking information on the haircut! If I didn’t mention how he looked like he was of arabic descent it might have led to uninformed answers.

That said, arabic culture is violent, and so is western culture, and most other cultures. I was not making any religious or political point by asking about the haircut. @rahm_sahriv I will ask the guy if I see him again. I’ll let yall know! :)
