What does cottage cheese taste like?

Asked by cockswain (15276points) May 18th, 2010

I have always been repulsed by the smell and taste (and now sight) of plain yogurt. I hear cottage cheese is pretty good for you, but it looks like just chunky plain yogurt. Therefore, despite being a grown man, I haven’t the chutzpah to taste it. Can someone describe what it tastes like so I can determine whether to try it, or shun it for life?

Not much really

It actually doesn’t taste much of anything at all, its very bland. That’s why
people mix it with onions and shrimp and other things.

I too have never tasted it. But I have seen my mother pop open a tub of it, sprinkle salt on top & eat it with a spoon. I am too chicken to taste it. The smell/texture is enough to turn my stomach. Ingesting it would surely kill me. :)

So it isn’t as vile as I expect?

janbb's avatar

It’s not vile but it’s not very pleasant. It’s kind of like eating slightly salty mushy nothing; I avoid it as much as I can.

Kinda squishy in the mouth. No real taste.

I eat it with fruit… pineapple or peaches. Sometimes with tomatoes and chives or onions, even avocados. I like that it’s bland because it lends itself to many other flavors, both sweet and savory.

Another thing is using it in dips. It mixes with a little bit of sour cream and any kind of dip mix to use with veggies or crackers. It can be blended or used chunky, either way is good.

I like it. It is a little bit like sour cream, if you can imagine sour cream divided into parts that are thicker, about the consistency of peas or lima beans, and parts that are thinner, creamy and almost runny (this is the “curds” and “whey”—the curds being the solid parts). Some people prefer small curd and some large curd; that describes how large the chunks are. It’s all the same, just some parts firmer than others, much the same as mashed potatoes that still have lumps are really all the same, just two different textures in one.

I think it has a distinctive taste, though not strong, just as the taste of cucumber and celery and even milk is not strong. The flavor is not as pronounced as that of sour cream or yogurt, but it’s clearly in the same family.

If you hate yogurt, you probably won’t care for cottage cheese. (I loved cottage cheese even as a kid but couldn’t stand yogurt until I grew up.) But there are some things that taste different from the way they smell—for instance, some cheeses are like that, and so are some vegetables—so you could risk a taste in private. Sample a scoop with a chunk of fresh pineapple.

Don’t try it for the first time at a fancy buffet or as a guest at a dinner party.

people like it but i’m too scared to try it. it smells and it looks bad and with food i take those 2 things into major consideration….

I can’t get over the consistency. It’s just too much for me. I don’t like it at all, and have tried to mix it with fruit..but that didn’t help.

I’ve never had it without honey. Try that. All my friends say that’s a weird thing to put in with cottage cheese, but hey.

I love cottage cheese. I have it with fruit mostly. I love halving a cantaloupe and scooping out the seeds and then putting the cottage cheese where the seed were and then scooping out the fruit and cheese. Just try it – it’s not going to kill you. Take a little spoonful and if you don’t like it, spit it out you big baby lol

Small curd cottage cheese is the best. cottage cheese tastes like melted vanilla ice cream with less taste. its really not bad. throw in your favorite fruit and top with Lite Miracle Whip, add some crackers and you have a meal all by itself.

I find the taste to be just nasty. I can’t handle the whole idea of eating curdled milk. Yuck!
I have tried it with fruit, and salad, but I just can’t eat it.

I couldn’t say. I’ve never been able to put that lumpy stuff into my mouth.

jazmina88's avatar

I love it. with melon, strawberries, veggies…..

1 taste…try it, you’ll like it…..small curd add pepper

@jazmina88 The word “curd” makes me feel like throwing up.

Tastes like curds and whey!

The taste reminds me of sour cream or cream cheese but lighter. It doesn’t taste bad. The texture is lumpy and runny at the same time. Just thinking about that makes me nauseous.

I think it’s funny that even though the OP asked for a description, most of what he got was opinion. I would have expected a little more neutrality on the subject—but apparently even though it’s bland, it elicits strong feelings!
