Keep them together as a litter and let mom handle the discipline. They also socialize one another if you allow the process to continue long enough.

You cannot discipline puppies. Their mother will. Very carefully, moving slowly, you can gently pick them up and pet them, accustoming them to human touch. Do not get the mother agitated. Do not try to carry the puppies away from the box.

If they nibble on your fingers, say “0w, ow, ow,” in a high-pitched voice like it is hurting you.

Protect your dog family, love them, take cues from their mom.

Does “make them nice” mean well adjusted dogs when they grow up? There is a window for socialization of animals that will help your puppies be relaxed and happy around humans, somewhere around the first 16 weeks of age. when they’re old enough to start exploring their environment (4–5 weeks), talk to them, stroke them, and otherwise have quiet, relaxed interactions with them.

This is a pretty nice article.

And consider having the bitch spayed as soon as the pups are weaned. 6–8 million animals are euthanized in shelters each year, so please do your part to control pet overpopulations.

0–21 days they don’t need any sort of human socialization only canine, after that as much human interaction as possible. What can a puppy under 6 weeks do that is not nice??? What are the temperaments of the sire and dam like, under 6 weeks that would probably be the primary determining factor.

Check out Charles Pfaffenberger, he ran the breeding program for guide dogs in California for a lot of years. He is/was and outstanding dog behavioralist. I’m not sure if he is still alive but his books should still be available.
