Why People Like Menthol Cigarettes?

Asked by DonnaDon (26points) June 22nd, 2010

I usually like to smoke Marlboro Filter but most of my friends like to smoke menthol cigarettes like Eva Menthol, Karelia Menthol, and Kiss Menthol. And I become very nervous when I feel the menthol smell around me. This is the main cause why I’m curious to know why they like the cigs menthol taste so much…..

Because they smell more like mouthwash…which is probably a smoker’s best friend.

My daughter use to call these “green cigarettes”. i can only assume the smoker likes the taste of menthol or mint, when they smoke. most of these type cigarettes have more tar and nicotine content, than non-menthol cigarettes.

I have tried both normal and menthol cigarettes, and find that menthol cigarettes result in a pleasingly smooth and cool-feeling smoke. I would liken the effect to what it feels like when you inhale deeply after having eaten a strong mint or chewed on some minty chewing gum. Depending on the brand you are comparing to, they can feel a lot less rough and harsh than a regular cigarette, even though this is little more than an effect of the menthol. Other than the smooth, cool-feeling effect that I describe, I didn’t notice any other differences, such as taste, or differences in breath odour, between smoking menthol and regular cigarettes.

My husband used to be a pothead back in the day and he says that’s why he prefers menthol cigarettes.I don’t know that this holds true for others tho. My grandma smokes menthol, and I highly doubt she used to be a pothead.

Probably because cigarettes taste like armpit. Anything that covers that foul taste has got to be an improvement. I smoke a pipe, yet being downwind from a cigarette smoker still makes me gag. I have asthma and I can smoke my pipe happily all day long without any problems—but if I walk into a house where people smoke cigarettes, I start wheezing and gasping and reaching for my inhaler. Smoking a cigarette is like huffing a burning tire; throwing pine branches on the fire can only help the flavour.

I used to smoke them because I prefer the flavour. Now I don’t smoke at all.

The menthol cigarettes (some brands, not all) tasted cleaner… that’s the only way i can describe it. but i couldn’t smoke them all the time… actually, i couldn’t smoke anything all the time.

Because of the nicotine. This chemical is the only reason. But the brain reward center creates associations. Anticipation triggers dopamine and makes people feel good. They smell the smoke of menthol cigarettes and the brains is telling them, hey, wow, nicotine is on its way. Yummy. It will make me feel even better. But eventually this whole scheme becomes a trap. Smokers need the nicotine just to feel normal again. Without it they feel bad.
