Treatment of a yeast infection while on antibiotics?

Asked by sliceswiththings (11723points) July 5th, 2010

This is sort of the sister question to my last question. I determined, with help from Flutherites, that the yeast infection I currently have was caused by the Penicillin I’m on.

Since I have to take the penicillin for another week, I want to find a way to not have a yeast infection for another week.

One added bonus: I’m currently in the middle of a health insurance snafu, so I’m currently not covered.

Is there anything I can get over the counter that will treat the infection without interfering with the antibiotic? I have a mysterious cream I bought in Portugal that I think it supposed to help, but if there is a higher-powered recommended one I’ll happily switch over.

Also, since I have to go prescription-less, are there homeopathic things I can do? Just eat a ton of yogurt?

Thanks a lot!

Monistat and Vagisil are available over the counter. Vagisil also has a screening kit for vaginal infections so you can be sure it’s a yeast infection before you start treatment. The Monistat will actually help clear up the infection while the Vagisil is for symptom relief.

You should also call the doctor and ask them if they have any other recommendations.

Not fun! I’ve had antibiotics cause a yeast infection before, too. When that happened, I continued taking my antibiotics, but also used a topical cream called Canesten. I’m not sure if it’s available over the counter where you live, but you can look for it (note: there are other names for it). Some topical creams may take a while to clear things up – for me, it took about a week for it to go away completely (but sweet relief was found around the 3-day mark).

Talk to your pharmacist about it, if you feel comfortable. Good luck!

Monistat, except you need to wait till you’re done with the other antibiotic or it will just cause the infection all over again.

There is a homeopathic remedy by AZO that prevents YI’s. (It won’t cure it if you already have one, but it will make the symptoms less painful)
Ask your doctor if it is okay that you take these with your prescription.
For a current YI, I would suggest over the counter cream like Monistat. They have a one time dose that you can use at night to cure it. But wait until you are finished with your cycle of antibiotics before using it, or it may re-occur.
All the best to you.

I love how the “homeopathic remedy” by AZO has lactobacillus in it (a probiotic). Probiotics can prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea and yeast infections, but it is quite a stretch to call them “homeopathic”.
