Do you think humanity will destroy itself?

Asked by poolskydog (7points) July 30th, 2010

The question is pretty self-explanatory. Through means of nuclear, biological, or other types of warfare, do you think that eventually our species will annihilate itself?

Probably not entirely, and not any time soon.

Contrary to what most people will tell you, humankind gets along alot better than we have in thousands of years. We just have more efficient killing tools these days.

I think the sun exploding will probably save us the bother. Wow it’s getting hot in here!

No. We may kill a lot of eachother, but there will be some survivors. It’s like a forrest fire, sometimes needed.

Sadly, I do, eventually—either in one catastrophic event (global nuclear war, a solar event, Snooki winning an Emmy) or bit by bit faster and faster, like we’re doing now with the planet’s ecology. Let me quickly add that I’m not walking around in a funk or cancelling any future dates… I ‘m just afraid that in the long run, the smartest of mankind aren’t smart enough to trump the dumbest.

Mmm, I think natural forces are a lot more likely to totally wipe us out—a global pandemic, meteorite, a bunch of earthquakes and tsunamis… who knows.

Although if we are going to wipe ourselves out, seems like anthropogenic climate change will probably be how we go out.

Yes. Every biological form runs its course.

Things change, the environment adjusts.

Obviously mankind has the capacity to destroy itself. The overpopulation problem I think more than anything would be the most likely cause of this.

What kind of odds are you giving? Any point spread?

I think our main worry is how we quickly deplete the resources which we need to live. Disease and famine could very well be our end, however it will be a drawn out and gradual end, and despite that I’m such a pessimist, I think that when shit gets dire, that’s when we really shine. As long as by then it ain’t too late. Some scientists say it already is, but don’t quote me.

Either that or we’ll make a virus that turns everyone into zombies.

Odds? none. 100% we will not be here in 10,000 years.

It’s destroying itself daily.

Look around… everything is becoming more software and less hardware… one day we too will become pure software… roaming the universe…
