There is an injured kitten at my house. What should I do with it?

Asked by wilma (16457points) August 27th, 2010

This kitten has been hanging around the neighborhood for about a week. I noticed that it was limping, but never could get close for a good look at it.
This morning after I left out some food and water for him, he came to me and let me hold him. He has a bad hip injury, I could feel that it was badly out of place. Tonight when I was feeding him again I can see a bone sticking out of his back at his hip area. I am sickened by it.
I have been trying all day to find the owner. I know he must have a family as he is so nice and wanting to snuggle in my arms.
I can’t keep this kitty, and I can’t afford to pay a vet bill for it. I need to take my own cat to the vet and I’m saving up for that.
He cries sometimes, but not all the time. He gets around and even climbs the steps. I can’t stand to think of him suffering. I don’t know what to do. I live in a small town in a rural area. There are no vets or animal shelters near me, but I could drive a distance if I had to, to get him some help. Any ideas? Please?

Take a drive to a vet, unannounced. They will give him the care he needs. Thank you for caring.

Honestly, you should bring the kitten to the vet to be evaluated and if the diagnosis is good, keep the cat. My mother and brother have recently added a kitten to their households in separate instances.

Take him to a vet.

Save his life at the expense of your own if you expect people like me to do the same for you.

I don’t know what the reason is that your own cat has to go to the vet, if it is urgent or just a annual check up, but if it is the latter, then you can maybe take the already saved money and spend it on the new kitty.
New kitty will be happy, you will be happy, and old kitty won’t mind either.
Perhaps you will find the owners of new kitty after the vet visit and you can maybe get your money back from them?
Good luck with new kitty!

Take him to the vet. If you can’t afford to pay for the animal’s care at least have the poor thing put down. Does it have a broken bone sticking through the skin or is it showing through a sore or an abcess? Either way the kitten is suffering. It needs to be cared for or euthanized, IMHO.

The cat may have a communicable disease, like rabies. If your brave enough wear proper gloves and protective clothing and take him to the vet. If not call animal control and protection and tell them you just saw someone throw a kitten out of a moving car. This kind of cruelty will usually have the authorities in your neighborhood come quickly. They will find the kitten and take him to to their facility where he will get proper medical care and be put up for adoption if you don’t want to keep him.

If you can afford to, take it to the vet (Dropping animals off at the vet is irresponsible and places an unfair emotional burden on the staff there. A vet clinic is not a shelter, and cannot afford to care for all of the animals that do not have responsible owners.)

If you can’t afford to have it cared for, look for rescue organizations in your area. They, too, are typically overwhelmed with unwanted animals, so if they can’t help you, your last option is to contact animal control. It is truly, truly kinder for him to be euthanized than to suffer a slow death trying to survive with an injury.

Thank you all for your responses.
The bone did not look to be broken, but it looked like the end of a bone.
I am trying now to find the closest rescue place, and if there are none that I can get to, then it will be the animal control office. It is after hours and I only get answering machines.
Thank you for helping me with this, I’m feeling a bit helpless with the poor thing.

@wilma You’ll get this taken care of and worked out, so many people wouldn’t even care. It’s nice to know that whatever happens, the kitten will not die cold and wet in a ditch along the side of the road somewhere.

@lillycoyote We can always count on you for down to earth sensitivity.

@Zyx I’m going to strongly agree with @Coloma. There’s a contraption you ought to look into. Really. Literally. It’s called a mirror.
