How can the Rev. Terry Jones – or any human being – believe and say “the Koran is evil because it espouses something other than biblical truth …” ?

Asked by Austinlad (16323points) September 10th, 2010

Sorry to reopen this topic, but I’m utterly flabberghasted by the Florida pastor’s quote, not only because it’s so horribly inflammatory, but more so, because I don’t understand how he or anyone can be so knowing as to believe Christianity is the only truth. Quote source

And so lies my issue with organized religion…....

The Reverend clearly has no true faith, rather an overwhelming need for attention and strife. (And no true intelligence either. Have you heard any excerpts from his sermons?)

The atheist says to the priest “we are both non believers. It’s just I don’t believe in one more God than you”

Love the first two comments…!

I don’t see how this is any different than the last 2,000 years or so.

Because he’s a bleeding idiot. Seriously. I’ve met him. He’s really, really creepy – in that “don’t leave your preteen boys with him” way.

I first want to say that I’m not in favor of what rev jones is doing nor do I even like the man, however to your question, I don’t see why it can’t be possible that Bible is the only truth. It obviously lies in faith but I certainly don’t believe it to be irrational that somebody believes their particular faith is the truth.

Austinlad's avatar

@critter1982, beliving one’s faith is the true, of course, no problem—but the only truth?

Nullo's avatar

Yes, @Austinlad, the only truth. They’re all mutually exclusive, so it has to be one. It’s up to you to decide which.

As for the OP: It’s quite simple, really.
Biblically, there is only one way to be reunited with God – something that God wants. Satan and his cohorts are big enough jerks to spend much of their collective existence trying to get back at Him for booting them out of Heaven, including but not limited to leading people away from the Truth when possible.
One such tactic is to inspire false religions. Granted, maybe not all other religions, but it’s a good bet that at least some around today are.

@Nullo I have to say, you scare me. You display such a rigid, judgmental mindset.

What’s truly distressing is that the rest of the world may now do the same thing that we’ve done with Muslims. That is, assume that a tiny minority of extremists represents the rest of us.

Nullo's avatar

@syz Could you explain yourself? I don’t see the connection between your post and mine.

Austinlad's avatar

Sorry, @Nullo, I don’t believe anyone possesses enough wisdom to know/have one truth. Faith, yes—unchallengeable knowledge, nope.

Nullo's avatar

@Austinlad It’s not a matter of wisdom, but experience.

I don’t understand why that isn’t possible. Often times there is only 1 truth. For example the world was created by God or it could have been created by the Big Bang. Maybe God created the Big Bang. They could all be right, all be wrong, or somewhere in between. It’s possible that only one is right. Again all based on faith and some sort of reasoning. Now in my opinion we should all respect others and their particular faiths with the understanding that we are talking about faith. This is where the rev crossed the line. I don’t think he crossed the line in the belief that his faith is the only one that is the truth.

@Nullo
You know, Scientologists believe that all religions (except their own), including Christianity, are the result of evil Body Thetans (that escaped from the bodies that Lord Xenu dumped in a volcano and nuked with hydrogen bombs), that have entered people’s bodies, messing with their brains.
Maybe Scientologists have the one and only truth and you are the one deceived.

Besides all this other religious stuff, it’s just plain disrespectful. Whatever God that you believe in, I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t condone being disrespectful to another person’s faith.

From a Christian (Seventh Day Adventist) point of view, I don’t know what God he’s worshiping, because it isn’t the one that I know.

My nose will grow. Apparently this is not true because it isn’t in the bible :\

“to believe Christianity is the only truth”

Well… That is how religion works.

One might also ask the question:

How can Muslim fundamentalists believe that anyone who follows a belief other than theirs is an infidel and should be given the option to convert, but failing that should be put to death for the protection of the faithful.

Bottom line is that radical fundamentalism is pretty absurd regardless of which religion it is associated with.

@ChazMaz Doesn’t the Koran have many similarities to the Christian bible, at least in terms of messages, parables, etc? (I am not saying they are the same, but don’t they have just a bit in common?

Nullo's avatar

@ragingloli That’s nice. I would say that I suppose that they could be right, but I don’t believe that they are. XD

@troubleinharlem That’s where it pays to be polite. But do not let politeness drive you from truth, for therein lie the deep waters of the Pea Sea.

@Pinocchio Not all truth is Biblical truth – the Bible is entirely silent on some topics, and it cannot be used as one of those 8-ball fortune telling toys. But Biblical truth is unequivocally true.

@Arp Islam is actually from the same family as Judaism and Christianity, though there are many who think it more like a Frankenstein, in terms of origin.

YoBob's avatar

@Arp As I understand it, just as the Christian bible contains the Jewish Torah, the Koran is an extension of the Christian bible. Mohamed considered Christians and Jews “people of the book”. However, the Muslims believe that the Christians and Jews do not follow the latest greatest message from God. This is similar to the Christian feelings towards Jews. The Christians respect the Jews and acknowledge the Torah as a basis for their religion, but since they don’t believe in Christ they are regarded as having missed out on the whole savior thing.

“Doesn’t the Koran have many similarities”

Similarities don’t count.

Tell a member of the Moose lodge that the Elk lodge is the same thing.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@ragingloli I don’t want to live in a world were scientologists are right.

amazonstorm's avatar

It’s all a matter of faith, I think.

That being said, I don’t believe him for two seconds. I think the man is nuts.
