Have you ever been left seething by a comment left for you on fluther only to find out later that you'd misinterpreted it?

Asked by Pazza (3268points) November 24th, 2009

There are a lot of EGO’s out there, and theres a lot of sarcasm, so after leaning that you’d misinterpreted that comment, do you cut and run, delete and re-register under a new alias, or do the right thing and appologise?

I run and delete. You?

Naked_Homer's avatar

If I have that happen I always apologize. Nothing wrong with being wrong.

reacting_acid's avatar

Yep, and I have gotten into a few arguments because of it. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a way of telling if someone was being sincere or sarcastic. Like how when you type you can do a whisper and a strong. It would be amazingly convienient.

Pazza's avatar

@NewZen
I seeth an then just get over it lol.

Pazza's avatar

@reacting_acid
Ahhhh…. theres that sarcasm I love….. haha

Sorry, did I just misinterpret that?

DominicX's avatar

Yeah, I’ve done that before and if I realize I misinterpreted it, then I will apologize. I’ve also left comments that left people seething before that were completely misinterpreted. I have received apologies before; it’s just the most mature thing to do.

kevbo's avatar

That just comes with the territory.

@reacting_acid: On Fluther, we use the tilde (~) as a sarcasm mark at the end of flippant statements. The trouble is, sometimes people forget to add it. I’m guilty of that fairly often. Whoops!

So far, I’ve never seethed or caused seething that couldn’t be easily fixed with a quick explanation and apology. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt instead of assuming that they’re assholes.

Pazza's avatar

@MacBean
Do all americans say ‘ass’ for ‘asshole’ English people say ‘arse’, though I surpose in England you’d have to say ‘fannyhole’ haha.

FutureMemory's avatar

There was one time I had to exercise an incredible amount of restraint when I thought someone had poo-poo’d one of my posts. I’m thankful I didn’t reply, after a few hours I realized I had completely misread what they said.

I feel bad about a few things I’ve said, I’m surprised no one has called me out.

Val123's avatar

Uh. Yeah.
@NewZen What do you do if it’s been too long and you can’t delete it?

Pazza's avatar

@Val123
Cut an run!........

Val123's avatar

@Pazza No! I don’t think I’d EVER intentionally say something seriously sarcastic to a person! It it’s misunderstood, I’ll ‘splain it, and also apologize for the misunderstanding.

Blondesjon's avatar

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN!?!

Val123's avatar

@Blondesjon Just a moment wipes eyes I’m willing to apologize but it’s hard to sound sincere when you’re laughing so hard! Just a moment. wipes eye. Deep breath.

Well, well, aren’t we a bit touchy today. It’s supposed to me WHAT EVER THE HELL YOU WANT IT TO MEAN!!!

Pazza's avatar

@FutureMemory
Why would they call you ‘Out’, they wouldn’t say @out surely????

(we don’t seem to be taking this seriously anymore…..lol)

Val123's avatar

@Pazza What’s THAT supposed to mean?????

gailcalled's avatar

You must certainly have a low boiling point to waste all that good energy in seething.

janbb's avatar

@Pazza In England, a “fanny hole” would be something else entirely!

Pazza's avatar

@gailcalled
Its just a reflex, sometimes you read something and misinterpret it (did I spell that right?)

Pazza's avatar

@Val123
If you want to know what THAT means, you should ask gailcalled, apparently she’s a master of english language & lit….lol

wundayatta's avatar

I’ve been left seething, but it’s usually not because I misunderstood a comment. Usually it’s because I totally missed the point, or I made a mountain into a molehill.

Or the other way around.

Whatever.

I have never once, in my entire fluther career, ever made a cynical or sarcastic or even humorous remark. Not once! And I challenge anyone to prove otherwise!

[grumble, grumble] Humor! What a load of crap!

reacting_acid's avatar

Daloon, I challenge you.

Just letting you know

Val123's avatar

@all OH OH!! The Gauntlet has be frowen!!!! Tickets! Tickets! Get ya tickets heah! Only $5.00 each and I DO accept pay pal!

wundayatta's avatar

Oy. Oy. Some people have no sense of humor! ;-)

Save your money, @Val123. You’re gonna need it for that big law suit you got pending.

Val123's avatar

@daloon Whad I do??

wundayatta's avatar

@Val123 You can’t fool me. That innocent act. I saw you behind the barn with mm-mmm-mm!

Val123's avatar

I don’t have a barn!! I don’t even know where a barn is!!!

wundayatta's avatar

And folks, she lives in Nebraska? I rest my case.

avvooooooo's avatar

@daloon Kansas! She’s from Dorothyland!

Val123's avatar

OK, fine!! I’m in the general vicinity of Kansas/Nebraska. BUT I DON’T HAVE A BARN!!! And I haven’t done anything involving a barn that would generate a lawsuit since that one time….BUT THAT WAS A LONG TIME AGO AND IT WAS MY COUSIN’S FAULT!! It wasn’t MY idea to break glass Christmas tree bulbs up on into the hay they fed the cows. I didn’t know. I didn’t even know they had cows, much less that they ate hay! I didn’t KNOW!! AND it was in the Seattle area, before Boeing bought the Kent Valley, where my grandparent’s farm was…..

Pazza's avatar

@everyone
I’m begining to regret asking that question!............

Val123's avatar

@Pazza Ya cuz I’m gonna turn around and sue YOU! .... do you have a barn?

Pazza's avatar

@Val123
We can;t afford barns, just barms, I think you call them bread rolls. Oh an sheds, they’re like very small barns, you wouldn’t get much hey in it mind, just a bike and a lawn mower, so I don;t think you’l be able to sue me for much.

Val123's avatar

Does ANYBODY around here have a barn??

janbb's avatar

@Val123 I had a barn when I was growing up – does that count? Now it’s under water as part of a reservoir.

Val123's avatar

@janbb Did you do anything in or around the barn that I can sue you for??

janbb's avatar

@Val123 I jumped out of the hayloft once and hurt my ankles but I don’t think you could sue me for that.

Val123's avatar

@janbb We in America, ain’t we??!! You scared me to death when you did that….pain and suffering and all that! :)

janbb's avatar

@Val123 LOL- I think. (Runs to consult lawyer.)

Val123's avatar

@daloon Started it!!

wundayatta's avatar

@Val123 Methinks the pot is calling the kettle black! But for full disclosure—I actually built a barn when I was 17. Behind the barn was a small corral for the calves to walk around in. If you want to meet me behind that barn, @Val123 , I’m sure we could generate some activity that would give rise to a multitude of law suits! But I get 75% of the proceeds, since, basically, it was my idea, or so you say! ;-)

Val123's avatar

NO TO BEHIND THE BARN!!!

wundayatta's avatar

What’s the big deal? Nothing but trees, leaves and cow patties back there. Nothing really to get in trouble with—unless you’re considering throwing a cow patty at me.

Pazza's avatar

This is getting silly now, look ok I have a barn OK! I’m not proud of it but it was left to me by my sisters ex-boyfriends mothers godfarther ALLFUCKINGRIGHT!............

SO SUE ME!
(though you’l have a job sein-as-though I’m not a person!.....)

Val123's avatar

I’m outta this one! I don’t DO barns!!

wundayatta's avatar

@Val123 Calm down. No one is talking about screwing a barn!

Val123's avatar

@daloon I have a new title. “Barn Burner.”

wundayatta's avatar

I am struck dumb! I have nothing to say to that!
