How to prevent my Facebook session from being available to other sites?

Asked by albert_e (529points) October 30th, 2010

I use Facebook with the “keep me signed in” / “remember me” option enabled. (I use the same personal laptop most of the time so it’s convenient)

However, when I visit other sites like cnn.com I wound not want to “Like” any pages or do anything else which can link to my Facebook profile.

However, cnn.com automatically shows “Friend’s Activity” panel on the right which shows my Facebook friends listed and their activities on the site. (I do not have a login on cnn site.)

My concern however is not just about CNN.com but with all sites in general – who may try to use my Facebook session / cookies / login credentials to link my activity to my profile. I simply do not want any of this.

How can I prevent my Facebook login from being read and used in this way by other syndicated sites?

Thanks in advance.

PS: I have already turned off Instant Personalization under Privacy Settings. Just now, I also turned off “Info accessible through your friends” and did a quick check – doesn’t seem to have made a difference on cnn.com

I think the only way you can avoid it is to log off Facebook when you aren’t actively using it.

Edit: I actually just went to CNN and when you click on friends activity, there is something that says “what’s this”. If you click on that, it takes you to an option to disable that on CNN’s site. I did that and the friends activity part went away.

If you use firefox there is the requestpolicy extension.

This is what Fluther looks like. http://i.imgur.com/z8vvf.png

It takes a few days to train the extension but it is worth it.

Here is TechCrunch.. That is just fucked up.

I am glad you brought this question up because I was curious myself, I for example play games but I really dont want others to know what I am doing, I have pretty much everything turned off with the sight, but its crazy that its not private as it tells us it is…

Isn’t it true that an application needs to have rights granted to it before it can mess with your personal information? If cnn.com or other sites read your facebook info, that’s not too bad. It’s when they ask you to authorize them to post content on your wall or send messages on your behalf that things get a little scarier. If you’re worried about privacy in that regard, may I suggest perusing the Facebook privacy settings a little more? Or, as @Seaofclouds mentioned, just log out when you’re not using it.

Facebook feeds (which are all these websites use) are just references that are integrated into the website locally. CNN does not have access to your facebook.

Facebook is also not safe and you’d be smart to get off.
