At its most basic, what really matters in life?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37346points) December 16th, 2010

Clean air? Food? Shelter?

Or is it friendship, love, and camaraderie?

Is it money and possessions?

Is it something transcendent or spiritual?

Relationships with others: loved ones, friends, family.

A mix of everything, in my opinion. I kind of feel like being content with just food and water doesn’t apply as much in these times. The standard of living has increased in some places, so people that are raised in more developed areas that don’t have to worry about basic necessities will of course tend to worry about other things. For example, my food, water, and shelter demands are met at the moment, so I’m not just going to settle there, I’m going to worry about obtaining a college degree, or paying off debt and saving money, or trying to get laid etc etc.

I believe it is transcendence and having a ‘spiritual’ connection.

Everything is of a temporary nature, people come and go, as do relationships, things, possesions, health, on & on.

My greatest ‘possession’ is my transcendence to acceptance of this fact.

That nothing that is ’ of the world’ is of a permanent nature.

In-joying ones own beingness, holding on loosely, in-joying everything without neurotic attachments….this IS true liberation and joy! ;-)

@Coloma : I like “in-joying.” I’m going to steal that one, if you don’t mind.

Life itself is about growth and perpetuation of all things.

Therefore Life is all about itself .

Acceptance. Of oneself and of others.

I think first the basic needs are food, health and shelter. Once you have enough of those, work, love and play contribute to fulfillment.

Recognising, locating & maintaining the pursuit of happiness :¬) Alas for some, this can turn out to be a pretty futile chase.

At it’s most basic, life, itself. Without life, nothing else is possible.

Nothing, and the sooner we come to that realization, the sooner we are free to feel what we want to feel.

This article on May You Be Happy website says it better than I can.

Life is about enjoying the journey, and taking time out to appreciate where it takes you.
