Do you find you often/always get sick after "hooking up" with someone for the first time?

Asked by tedd (14078points) December 17th, 2010

I’m recovering from what I believe to be the flu at the moment. I’m also going through a rough time relationship wise and so I’ve had a lot of time to just lay here in bed and think. And it occurred to me that most of the times I’ve been ill in the last 4 or 5 years, have been almost immediately following “hooking up” with a new girl. I can think of five times, where a new g/f or fling or what have you, and I, go to at least 3rd base… and less than a week later I’m ill. Either strep throat or the flu in every case. The girl in each case is not ill, nor does she get ill. Further “interactions” after my recovery do not lead to repeat sicknesses. And to my knowledge all of them were clean.. In fact I would go on to date 3 of them long term.

I’m wondering if anyone has any explanations, or if I’m the only one to have this kind of “luck.”

Maybe it’s guilt?

New bacteria/latent viruses that she has that your immune system isn’t used to/recognizing. Sounds plausible to me.

Nah..and I hook up all the time…maybe it’s the yoga, it strengthens my immune system.

That never happened to me during my hooking up days.

@troubleinharlem uhh, not sure why?

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard See thats what I’m thinking, but at the same time its not like crazy sicknesses, its standard stuff.. I’m pretty sure that in at least 1 or 2 cases I had already had said sickness (usually the flu).

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I will grant that not all times was I in that great of shape, but at least a couple of them I was on a “health kick” working out and having vitamins and eating healthy.

Yeah! Share those germs :-)

I would think it would be your body getting used to her foreign bacteria, otherwise coincidence?

I haven’t any trouble similar to what you’re going through, but I did catch a certain g-word one time. Learned my lesson and am more cautious about who I hook up with.

It’s never happened to me before but I’m also not one for random hookups, especially if the person I know has shown to be sick or has told me they’re sick/getting over it.

Stress, even from good events, weakens the immune system. A lot of people get a cold after their weddings because of that. Makes honeymoons suck, I bet.

It’s not uncommon for women to get a urinary tract infection after having sex with a new partner, so it’s plausible that you’re getting sick because you’re getting exposed to new things.

Maybe a trip to the health food store for some immune system boosters?

Nope. I feel like a king.

@Simone_De_Beauvoir – it’s not the yoga that strengthens your immune system. It’s the hooking up. ;-)

@iamthemob – I take mass transit to work and home each day, so I have a killer immune system :-p
