My laptop has an HDMI output. Can I hook it directly to the TV or do I need a hardware interface?

Asked by Rarebear (25192points) December 20th, 2010

Let’s say I wanted to watch something on Hulu and hook it up to the television. Can I do it with just an HDMI cable?

Yes. As long as your tv has HDMI inputs you will be fine.

edit – just note that you will need to change the input on the TV.

How do I know if my laptop has an HDMI output? It’s a MacBook Pro, bought last November (a year ago)

@Samantha_Rae – No MBP has ever had HDMI. But you can get a converter for about 20 bucks at the Apple Store.

Ditto @world_hello: We do it home when we’ve exhausted the choices on Netflix. Yay hulu!

You can hook it up directly to the TV; it’ll just treat the TV as an external monitor. You might have to mess with your resolution settings a little bit, but you should have no problems.

Thanks everybody.

You will never need cable again : )

@Seelix is right, we always end up rebooting the laptop/PC in order for the audio to be accessible via the TV remotes.

Thanks. My daughter has the TV right now, but I’ll try it later tonight.

It hooks to the input on an HD TV so you can watch programing on your home television that is transfered from your notebook.
