Like Bill said, depends on their age, but Moby Dick is the greatest book ever about whales etc.

This particular kid is almost 5 but very advanced for her age so anything for 5–8 year olds would be good. However, if people have ideas about books that are for slightly older kids I’d be interested in those as well.
Moby Dick is truly amazing but even a 5 year old as precocious as this one is not going to get into it. :)
Other recommendations for science books for kids on topics besides whales would also be of interest. Thanks!

@occ I’ll invite Gailcalled… she will know.

This is one was highly recommended. I have no idea if it is good.

Whales on Stilts
Author: M.T. Anderson; Illustrator: Kurt Cyrus
Summary: Twelve-year-old Lily Gefelty is an ordinary girl who gets caught up in a mad scientist’s evil plot to take over the world using . . . whales on stilts.

I found a terrific site at National Geographic.

The text may need to be simplified for a 5 year old however. There is a neat picture that compares a blue whale to a bus. The whale could put the bus in its pocket.

This is their site designed for younger children.
