Is it OCD if you constantly obsess over someone's illnesses and death even if they're truly ill?

Asked by Aster (20023points) March 5th, 2011

Yeah, I know it doesn’t do any good to worry, weep and read about someone’s illnesses that you know are going to do them in based on xrays, blood tests and doctors’ remarks. But is this really OCD or a normal reaction to the imminent loss of a loved one?

No, it’s not OCD. It is an attempt at understanding and controlling something that is beyond understanding and control. It is a different form of denial, by focusing on the details of someones health, the person is avoiding coming to terms with their grief and feelings about losing someone close to them.

It could be considered obsessive compulsive, but it would not be obsessive compulsive disorder, since it is situational only. Many people go through similar thoughts and feelings when faced with this kind of situation.

Are you going through this? It may help to talk to a counselor for the time being. If it’s really consuming your life, it might be beneficial to talk to your doctor about a prescription. SSRIs work well for anxiety and depression.

I hope if it is in fact you that we’re talking about, that you can enjoy your time with this person while they are here. Keep supportive company. If you need an ear, let me know.
